For last week’s episode I put together a mix of modernist ballads from West Africa, primarily works from the 1970s. About half the songs gathered here are from Senegal, an epicentre of post-colonial cultural forms, featuring a capacious cosmopolitan hybridity which drew from American jazz and psychedelic rock, French chanson, Cuban bolero, Congolese rhumba, Martinician beguine, Wolof griot music, and the complex polyrhythms of Mande musical traditions. Other songs in this mix come from Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Togo, and Benin, joined in pan-African solidarity as well as sharing a modernist sensibility, fraught with both melancholy for the failure of post-colonial nationalism and a utopic yearning for social change. These songs are exemplary of Tsitsi Ella Jaji calls “stereomodernism.” in her wonderful book, Africa in Stereo.

and finalized in response to the deepening anguish in the Middle East—
particularly for the women and children facing starvation, fear, and loss.

The music itself is a cry—
a slow, mournful trumpet woven with reflective drums.
A beat that marches with grief, yet carries the weight of hope.
It is both gentle and fierce.
Tender and unshakable.

This is not a distant observation.
It is an invitation:
Feel this as if it were your own.
Because in the eyes of compassion, it is.

Precatio calls the soul into awareness—
to pray, to weep, to witness, and to remember the humanity of all people.
To awaken the part of us that still aches for peace.
To cry out for healing not only in word, but in vibration.

This is a sonic prayer.
A call to compassion.
A sound that carries the weight of those who cannot speak.

Let it draw you in.
Let it call you to feel.

Let it become your prayer, too.
