Manos Saklas invites Steve Goodman (Kode9) a London-based artist, writer, and electronic musician on Otoliths in Flux.
Their discussion delves into Goodman’s practice, which spans theoretical research, electronic music production, sound installations, and label curation. They further talk about his explorations of sound, affect, and the politics of frequency, as well as his recent projects, including Astro-Darien and Escapology. Goodman also discusses his collaborative endeavors with AUDINT, his conception of Flatlines—a sublabel of Hyperdub dedicated to audio essay formats—and his recent contributions to Sonic Faction, an exhibition series and a book published by Urbanomic. Lastly, they reflect on his past experiences as a member of the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit (CCRU), highlighting the enduring influence of this collective on his practice.
Goodman’s work examines sonic warfare, the affective dimensions of sound, and the intersections of music, philosophy, and speculative fiction. Drawing from his seminal book Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear and the AUDINT-edited Unsound: Undead, Goodman reflects on how sound operates as a force that modulates perception, behavior, and urban space.
Otoliths in Flux is a digital platform exploring emerging sonic art through artist talks, discussions, and radio pieces with influential contemporary artists, theorists, and composers.
Steve Goodman aka Kode9 is a DJ/Producer, artist and writer. He set up the record label Hyperdub in 2004, the sub label Flatlines in 2019, and from 2017 Hyperdub’s monthly event series Ø. His book Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear was published on MIT Press in 2009, and with AUDINT he co-edited the book Unsound: Undead for Urbanomic Press (2019). With the group AUDINT he has produced numerous sound installations, and his sound designs have also been presented as part of the Hyundai commission at the Tate Modern (2018) and the Barbican ‘AI: More than Human’ in London (2019).

C LACRAIA ESTIVESSE VIVA

“Lacraia, também conhecida como “centopeia”, são animais caçadores noturnos muito rápidos que possuem o corpo adaptado para penetrar em frestas, onde se escondem durante o dia.” 

Com a constante eliminação das existências não-normativas do planeta, pensar na artista Lacraia é lembrar de umas das primeiras figuras pretas e não normativas na TV brasileira, um choque da não cisgenesis que invadiu a vida de todas as pessoas nos anos 2000, onde as narrativas heteronormativas ocupavam (e ainda ocupam) todos os espaços possíveis. Espaços formados por estruturas binárias de comportamento que se fincaram em muitas almas, uma geração que dava muita importância a um projeto de liberdade a partir das vestes, culturas, comportamentos e estéticas, graças à revolução digital que influenciou todos os continentes.

Precisamos imediatamente apoiar artistas vives, e interromper os processos de santificação das pessoas TLGBQI+, pessoas que não escolheram a morte, e sim foram condicionadas a interromper a sua existência por conta da estrutura de humanidade em que habitamos.

Entenda que tudo que foge de uma engrenagem binária, não é bem-vinde.
TRANS, não vivem lugares de binariedade.
BIXAS, não vivem lugares de binariedade.

Será que em pleno 2020 não estamos caindo e vivendo nos mesmos sistemas excludentes? Abraçando a verdadeira miséria, e beijando o antagonismo das representatividades TLGBQI+?!
