By the time he was 15, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Carter Tanton was already playing bar shows in his hometown of Baltimore.  Two years later, he caught the attention of Gary E. Smith, best known for discovering and producing The Pixies.  After working together for a year, they parted ways, but Tanton never slowed down.  In the mid-2000's he released a couple of EPs with his band Tulsa, prompting Rolling Stone's David Fricke to claim "…his indie-seraphim voice is not of this world…", and after a particularly impressive live set KEXP's John Richards said "…he's one of the best singer-songwriters in the country today."  Beyond his critical acclaim, Tanton's early work was cited as an inspiration by his old friend Adam Granduciel of The War on Drugs.  As Granduciel recalled in an interview with Pitchfork, "He was sleeping in someone's basement, playing every instrument, going through this breakup,...That was the first time I saw someone make music obsessively. I’d never seen anyone living inside of something, to that level."  

Over the years, Tanton has toured and recorded with numerous artists including Marissa Nadler, Strand of Oaks, Lower Dens, and The War on Drugs. In 2012, he assembled Freeclouds, his first collection of songs for Western Vinyl.  A couple of years later, Tanton moved to England where he wrote all of the songs on his new album Jettison the Valley. The change of environment, and his rediscovery of early British influences including Richard Thompson, Nick Drake and John Cale sparked a powerful shift in perspective, which led him to write his most cohesive and personal work to date.  Other than the pedal steel featured on two songs, Tanton engineers and plays every instrument on the album.  His old friend and collaborator Marisa Nadler contributes lead vocals to "Jettison the Valley", and Sharon Van Etten sings on "Twenty-Nine Palms" and "Through the Garden Gates".   

More about Jettison the Valley in his own words: 
"Jettison the Valley began in a little dot of a town outside Bristol called Hambrook in the Fall of 2013. I had just moved to England with my girlfriend where we lived in a caravan on her family's plot of land with the M5 motorway on one side, and a horse farm on the other.  To get away from the incessant low rumbling of cars, I often walked along the area's ancient public footpaths that carve strange ways through the countryside. On those walks, my previous 30 years in America billowed and collapsed in front of me. As I stood there in the blowback, the constant push of time seemed to finally relent, and I found enough distance from it to see my past in clear broad strokes.  After a few months we moved to Oxford and lived in a little attic apartment up on a hill. I spent most days watching the weather roll through the valley and writing these songs about my relationship ending.  Eventually, I felt I had to come back to the states to record them.  I consider this my first solo record. The other two releases I've put out under my own name since 2005 were simply collections of scattered recordings, mixtapes essentially. Jettison was written in one long sitting, each song feeding the next."

Reinhold Niebuhr famously once said, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Pretty existential stuff to introduce the new release on Alinka Ratner and ex-Hercules and Love Affair member Shaun J. Wright’s excellent Twirl Recordings, but as with previous successes, ILL City Exit EP by UK producer Spatial Awareness and the equally impressive ‘Don’t Fight It’ from Stereogamous feat. Shaun J. Wright, Ena Lind’s debut EP is an absolutely brilliant piece of dance floor weaponry and it’s out on 29th September from all good retailers

Featuring 2 originals: ‘The Wisdom To Know The Difference’ and personal favourite ‘Sadie’ the pack is rounded out by two spectacular remixes, and clearly demonstrates Ena is no one trick pony. Berlin-based (as so many are these days) Ms Lind has forged a very productive DJ career already as the founder of local night, Mint along with a seriously busy schedule DJing around her hometown and beyond. Now, with new focus on production, The Wisdom To Know The Difference is her first foray into the world of music retail, and what an entrance it is. The title track leads with a simple, yet effective off-beat hat and bongo pattern adding depth and extra percussion elements along the way. The bass is sparse and timely creating a patient groove and with the addition of classically ravey orchestral stabs, a thing of beauty unfolds. Dance music veteran and fellow Berlin native, Anna Leopolder takes things deliciously dark, paying more attention to smoothing out the groove and making it more, dare I say, progressive in nature. The resulting remix is a broody and epic synthathon full of power and emotion.

Sadie begins with a winsome pad and grubby 90s bass drum, and as the elements slowly fade into hearing range, I’m transported to a dark and dirty warehouse late at night in a less than reputable part of town. I imagine staring down at my phone as it’s dim light tells me I ought to be home in bed by now but secretly, I’m glad I’m not. Around the mid way point the track jumps into life with a nagging violin loop sample made into a pad and some insistent hat lines. The break shortly after gives welcome respite before we launch into the second half of the track and more late night warehouse grooving. Of the two originals, this one tells me a story and I’d say more likely the kind of track I would play: It’s a grower. Finishing up proceedings, Jacktone Records co-runner Doc Sleep takes things in an altogether different direction. More stomp than schmooze, her rendition strips away the essence of the original to create an honest if raw techno workout.

Israeli artist-producer Noam Helfer makes a bold return under the new moniker Age is a Box, with his debut single featuring the vocal talents of Sasha Daniel.

‘Our Religion Is Truth’ showcases Helfer’s inherent rhythmic energy alongside pensive and inspired lyricism, as he explores themes of growth and self-bettering. The pair’s distinctive tones and fluttering melodies are glued together by stirring vocal harmonies that pepper a track that is so addictive it hurts.  Known for crafting mercurial soundscapes, the inspired artist’s sound encapsulates the electric atmospheres of Nicolas Jaar, Forest Swords and Bonobo, and the soulful immediacy of Kaytranada and Sylvan Esso.

David Douglas (1983) is a Dutch producer of electronic music. David Douglas (1799) was a Scottish plant hunter who explored North America collecting seeds of plants and trees unknown to mankind at that time. Inspired by the Scottish botanist, David from '83 started looking for his own musical seeds. The greatness of nature – the sublime mountain landscapes, Icelandic lupine fields, arctic coastlines, Californian fir forests – invigorate his music.

'Royal Horticultural Society' is David’s debut EP although it sounds like anything other than a debut. His music can be described as warm, playful, analog, adventurous, diverse and pure. But most of all as he quotes himself: 'It's electronic music for the mind'.

'David Douglas - Royal Horticultural Society' will be released digitally June 12th.
