As the year gets closer to its end, Serenades wraps it up with a smooth VA release called 'Late Night Serenades Vol.1' - As the name suggests, the release is a compilation of brand new smooth tunes perfect for late night. First we have the super talented young producer duo from Holland The Planty Herbs (Wax On) with their timeless Deep House masterpiece 'Mood'. With the perfect sample layering and the smooth bass lines this one will get your head nodding. Secondly we have a new bouncy tune from the label head Roberto Rodriguez called 'Pom' which takes it's name from the tunes slight reggae vibe. This ones slightly more to the floor. The third one is a lovely chordy tune called 'Salt' from a young talented producer from the US called Evan Iff (Dirt Crew, Large and Seven Music). Deep and smooth. The final track of the release comes from the finnish dj/producer Toni Halo from the Kingfishers fame. Raw and funky is the name of the game.

About the track:

One of the best things about the traveling circus that is the music biz is meeting those who also wish to share their shine after watching you share yours.
'Me against Me', conceptually was spawned from one of those moments. We were in SF on a triple-late-nt-day-break with a couple of bros from Sactown, when conversation lead us to the discovery that one was professional Boxer and 2 time world champion Kickboxer who goes by the name, Erik "The Hitman" Reagan. He was the nicest, unassuming fella you could ever meet. After fielding about an hour of questions (as both Bob and I have always wondered about the squared circle), I asked him how he handled all the sh*t talking those cats do in the ring, being that he's so nice? He looked at me smiled and said, "Burke, by the time I get to the ring I've already won or lost the fight. I was never fighting them, it was always me against me. This is common knowledge in places like on the golf course and in the weight room however, coming from someone who was the best in the world at something so intense, it was like a light went off when talking about the hustle and bustle of this music game.
Later that week we're in LA for a show and spending the day working on a collaboration (this song you hear) with our homie and beat-smith mogul, Stephan Jacobs. So I threw out a text to our old homie Souleye just to let we were in the area working on a new track. He and I got into a nice reunion chat, he ended up at the studio and the rest is in the tune. The theme is relevant to all of us. The only person we need to be better than is the person we were yesterday.

If we cast our minds back to last year and the release of Architeq's original 'Birds Of Prey' release, you may remember we were quite smitten with his mentallist fusion of discoid bass with post-junglist electronica and equally baffled by its release on Tirk records. So we're even more surprised and delighted to receive this remix EP including revisions from Kelpe, Fulgeance, Debruit and James Pants taking Architeq's 'Birds Of Prey' cut and bashing it into ever fresher angles. Kelpe's mix is one of our favourites here, taking the sub 100bpm cosmic disco route with a muscular flow riding arpeggiated basslines and unspooling synthlines, and we're equally impressed with Fulgeance's super crafty beatworked version packed with cutting-edge time-stretching effects and post-Dilla snare slaps or Debruit's mix managing to maintain the rhythmic tension of the original with slight double timed rhythms underpinned by a heavy head-nod beat. Flip the wax and you'll find a proper sleazy version of 'Sleeping Bear Lament' from James Pants featuring some nifty synthwork from the Stones Throw fella, but the 12"s highlight comes from Architeq himself with a superb dub mix of 'Birds...' reworking the drums and percussion before adding truly authentic tape delay effects for a comforting level of warmth and organic texture. Last autumn I went to South Africa to perform at Earthdance festival and to produce music at the Red Bull Studios in Cape Town. It turned out to be one of the most inspiring tours of my life and together with Youngsta, PH Fat, Sibot, Greg Reve, and Jam Jarr I channeled that inspiration into what I feel is some of my freshest new music. It was the spring in South Africa so Youngsta and I created a summer tune called 'Orange Sky', which is all about sunrises, sunsets, good friends and good times.

A pioneer of West Coast bass music, Stephan has played at iconic festivals like Coachella, Lightning in a Bottle, and Envision, and supported Pretty Lights on the Illumination tour. His production credits include a wide range of artists such as Benny Benassi, Showtek, Emancipator, and Griz.

Recently, Stephan’s focus has shifted to Bigger Than Us and BOSA, two projects rapidly gaining momentum. Bigger Than Us, a collaboration with acclaimed singer Marieme, blends dance music with immersive experiences, while BOSA offers a unique twist to world-inspired house and dance music. Both are at the forefront of Stephan's creative energy, with exciting new releases on the way.

Stephan has also been working with A-List artists such as A$AP Rocky, Brockhampton, Russ, Run The Jewles, 24kGolden, Mike Posner and more for over a decade, utilizing his wide skill set and ability to take on complex projects efficiently.
