Index Marcel Fengler unearths another Berlin-forged gem with a debut release for Somewhen. Following an impressive pair of EPs on his own Sana imprint, label boss Marcel Fengler was quick to invite the newcomer to the IMF family. Following a pair of head turning performances on line-ups alongside Fengler at his Berghain home, the time has come for IMF 05 to bring Somewhen’s talents to wider attention 

A-side cut ‘Dain’ is a stripped down techno trip engineered for dancefloors at dawn: a siren call to the club’s most battle hardened heads, its subtle machinations will prove deadly in the right DJ’s hands. Over on the B-side, ‘Aula’ is the EP’s more unpredictable beast, its rougher rave edges rounded off by a rich bass synth and enigmatic vox pads that give the track an unsettling air as it nears its conclusion. XJ closes the EP with an insistent slice of acid with Somewhen’s own playful modern twist.

This time the we’ve hooked up with London party starters and burgeoning label Them to give away a track that somehow missed out being released as part of their inbound ‘Mindwarp’ EP from Barcelona based techno don Cardopusher.

With the release of the Mindwarp EP just around the corner, Them and Cardopusher are in a celebratory mood and we're passing the benefits on to you as we offer you Cardopusher's ‘Dehydrated’ as the inimitable Venezuelan originally intended before JoeFarr reshaped the cut in his own image.

Cardopusher - Dehydrated

Waves of pulsing, layered techno from the revered Mala Junta resident.

If the electronic music industry is caught in the crosshairs of a battle over what makes for true techno, then D.Dan is one of the underground's great modern emissaries.

A figurehead from the new guard of DJs to arise in the '20s, the Berlin-based artist and Mala Junta resident is an ambassador for a sound that is strongly anchored in the classic roots of techno. His productions, like his mixes, are revved-up takes on the hypnotic wormholes that defined dance floors last decade, but with a fresh (and high BPM) millennial twist. 

Originally from Seattle, D.Dan became enamoured with the spectral stylings of psych rock and shoegaze in adolescence. It's not difficult to see how the cosmic tapestry of bands like Cocteau Twins became a blueprint for the entrancing music he's gone on to make as an adult. His releases on Mutant Future and summerpup are latticeworks of loops and layered percussion, custom-tooled for lost hours on the dance floor and drawn-out mixes behind the decks. 

This approach directly extends into his DJ practice, where he pairs song selections from contemporaries that mirror his own reduced, controlled approach to techno. RA.994 is a Grade A display of contemporary four-to-the-floor from flagbearers like Roll Dann and Marcal.

And like D.Dan's standalone records, his RA Podcast finds room for sweetness—the intermittent peal of an open clap, the steady ripening of a chord—while ultimately emphasising the beauty of function and form over flair.

Spanish up and comer 30drop has been building up a solid footing with some spaced out Techno landing an album on Detroit Underground, contributions to the superb SUB tl ran by Leandro Gámez and HD Substance, also being remixed by Steve Rachmad aka Sterac and The Back Dog. As his journey progresses, the imminent launch of his second artist album on his own 30drop Records is nearing release.

The Time of Cruel Miracles is an extraordinary palette of bleepy goodness, wrapped up in nostalgia and implementing plenty of modern ideas along with functional frameworks running the show. A depth of great production and delicate layers make you realise the labour of love this must have been, proving he is here to stay and an artist to watch closely in the future.

For this DT:Premiere we selected one of the four remixes in this extended package by Berlin legend Substance aka Substance and his take on the “Goldene Spirale” original track. Known for his input to labels like Ostgut Ton, Token, Chain Reaction and Echochord for example, his powerful, gritty and energetic trip focuses on one thing, just blazing a trail and crushing anything in it’s path…

Paris based label Skryptöm welcomes our recent mix guest for his second EP on the imprint that is ran by the excellent Electric Rescue.

The latest release called Asgardia EP from Moteka follows his back catalogue including FLASH, Newrhythmic and Children of Tomorrow amongst others. This is a real surprise package that also features fellow French artist Hemka known for her works on Float and Labrynth, but also comes with two striking remixes by the man the myth… Jeroen Search from Netherlands.

The track we selected for this DT:Premiere is the collaboration track of the Parisians titled “Apogee” that is an absolute weapon. The thundering, stuttering beat is powerful and captivating as it ploughs forward, brimming with tension. It doesn’t take long to discover the gigantic lead synth that is gritty, gothic, and feels ultimately like a futuristic horror theme. Not to be missed!
