Stephan Hinz returns to Second State once again, painting the canvas of silence with his masterstroke of imposing drums and vicious hooks. 'Venom' is Hinz' latest offering and comprises four incredibly massive tunes which perfectly showcase his evolving sound of Techno's best in peak time pandemonium.
The title track 'Venom' kicks off the EP with a devilish throbbing groove while mischievous organ stabs rise and fall generating an impeccable balance between tough and playful. 'Primal' follows up with a more devious style where relentless percussion and sinister synth stabs culminate into absolute debauchery. Switching gears, 'Out Of It’ shows Stephan twisting the track's elements into a grooving, up-beat tool with a contagious faction of ingredients that transform into a sublime trip suitable for a million situations.
Clinching the EP is a venture into the ethereal: the aptly titled 'Shadowselves' takes a journey into the dramatic world of villainous sonics and surging tones creating a labyrinth of dense atmospherics before winding into a grand crescendo.

EARLIEST MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Maybe the most important musical influence was when I first heard Jimi Hendrix’s 'Voodoo Child' and the b-side 'All Along The Watchtower’. It was a five-inch single and ended up looking like a spiral, from the number of plays it got on my turntable.

This release was the ignition to become a guitarist and a musician. When Henrix played his hi-gain sounds it has the same intensity and expression similar to that of todays techno music, I think anyway. HIs guitar didn’t sound like a guitar, and more like an electrical thunderstorm.

Later when I discovered electronic music, it was mainly Tangerine Dream that has been a strong influence and Klaus Schulze. They had this intense atmosphere that you can maybe hear on some of my older productions that I did. When I heard the early R&S Records like 'Energy Flash', ‘Metasm' and 'Acid Phase' - I was set on fire with inspiration, and still am today.
 

IDEAL SETTING TO LISTEN TO THIS?
Most likely a main room techno party dance floor, with a top-notch sound system, sweat dripping from the walls and a comet passing by. LOL. I simply love high energy moments in contrast to deep vibes in a perfect flow. ‘Snake’ has these changes from major to minor that give it a certain intensity together with that sizzling tone building up throughout.
 

FILE IT NEXT TO?
‘Snake’ sits next to my collection amongst other atmospheric tracks like ‘Sooth’ also by 2Pole or ‘Premonitions’ by Saturn Storm, not forgetting Charlotte de Witte’s ‘The Healer’.

Premiere: Christian Smith & 2pole - Snake (Jam El Mar Remix) [Tronic]

The seventh volume of Drumcode’s annual A-Sides compilation hits with no less than 10 debuts for the label, with Charlotte de Witte, ANNA, B.Traits and Scuba’s SCB project, among the collection of topline artists to release their maiden productions on the imprint. 

Over two decades into its lifespan, Drumcode keeps evolving and excelling, pushing techno forward while remaining wholly respectful of its roots. This reputation for progression was further fueled this summer with its inaugural festival at the NDSM Docklands in Amsterdam, featuring a long list of heavyweights including Nicole Moudaber, Joseph Capriati, Amelie Lens and Ida Engberg, among others. 

As ever, the A-Sides compilation provides a timely opportunity to showcase the full range of its sonic repertoire, with Adam Beyer scrupulously selecting 22 unreleased tracks that have taken prime position in his sets over recent months. 

Outstanding all-round talent ANNA kicks off the compilation with ‘Portable Paradise’, a pulsating cut that sets the tone for the top-shelf club cuts to follow. Also entering the debut field with their first ever Drumcode dalliances are B.Traits and Charlotte de Witte. The esteemed Canadian selector offers up ‘I Feel The Music’, a euphonic track that’s been sought after since spring, and the Belgian ballista unlocks a thick-edged club bomb in ‘Remember.’

Leaders of Drumcode’s new brigade, exciting Brazilian Wehbba and British techno alchemist Boxia set out to impress. Wehbba’s straight-talking ‘Just’ hits with an immediate sense of urgency before neck-snap claps strike with force, and Boxia’s ‘Final Call’ elicits physical engagement with mellifluous vocals and soaring pads. 

Continuously looking to bolster the profiles of emerging talent, Berlin-based producers Weska and Juliet Fox are brought into the fold with equally engaging razor-sharp tracks that are primed to do lasting damage. 

Other notable highlights include an exhilarating workout from Reset Robot - the most released artist on Beyer’s imprint Truesoul – as he lands on Drumcode for the first time. And tastemaker’s favourite Jel Ford makes a welcome return as he ushers in techno rhythms with bustling breaks in ‘Nightshade.’

Elsewhere, support from label mainstays comes in from Bart Skils, who offers a work of consummate skill in ‘West Of The Moon.’ Alan Fitzpatrick, who’s been heavily featured across the A-Side series, joins forces with Scuba as he operates as his uncompromising alias SCB. The result is a propulsive floor-gripper that testifies to their masterful deftness as co-producers. Formidable duos Dense & Pika and Pig&Dan also contribute with powerful compositions.

After exploding onto the scene with ‘Doch’, arguably one of the best techno slammers of 2014, on Pan-Pot’s Second State imprint, Berlin-based Stephan Hinz’s career has been on a stratospheric rise. A talented live artist, Hinz is a master at the controls and an orchestral raconteur of the highest caliber. His live sets deliver explosive original material, leaving sweaty ravers in packed clubs wondering what the hell just happened. 

2016 was even more successful, with debut EPs on seminal labels such as Nicole Moudaber’s MOOD and Carl Cox’s Intec (the latter following a collaborative release with Philipp Ruhmhardt back in 2015), along with more new music on Second State, notably the techno stomper ‘Venom’. These achievements join an impressive back catalogue from labels such as Adam Beyer’s Drumcode. 

Hinz’s skill both in the studio and on the dancefloor have catapulted him from DJ’s favourite to the discerning clubber’s choice; as a result, he’s garnered impressive bookings worldwide with esteemed promoters including Awakenings, London Warehouse Events (LWE), LEAF London and HYTE, and bookings at prominent clubs such as Gashouder (Ams), Amnesia (Ibiza), Kristal Glam (RO), Watergate (DE) and Baum (Colombia).

Whilst the last couple of years have been integral to the young producer’s success and reputation, his contribution to electronic music has always been diverse; after all, this is an artist whose love for classical and orchestral led him to apply for an internship with Hans Zimmer (he might still consider a call back!). His tenure hosting the eminent ‘DASDING Plattenleger’ radio show is now in its eighteenth year, and he composes music for film and television, including the upcoming film ‘2Close2u’ which will be premiered at Canada Independent Film Festival in February 2017.
