In the wake of the tragic Orlando night club shooting, that left 49 dead and many more injured, many Americans responded with messages of hate towards both the deceased and Islam. While statements that “God sent the shooter” and “they deserved it” are spreading across social media, “49” by Stephen Appman is a response to those who try to justify the shooting. Stemming from feelings of disbelief and anger, “49” seeks to provide a beacon of light in a dark time when the freedom of speech is being used to justify persecution.
