Recently when I was sick in bed and had a lot of free time I did something crazy, something that I wanted to do since a long time. I've put together a 6 1/2 hours long mix with the 100 most favourite songs of my childhood - basically all music that was released in the 70s. Not sure if it’s the same thing for you guys, but music that was around me in the first 10 years of my life, will always hold a very special place in my heart and will always take me back to the intense emotions I had at this age when I deeply fell in love with music for the first time. Around the age of 7, 8 I had already started to develop a profound sense of what kind of music I liked and wanted to dance to. With my own pocket money and the help of my parents, I seriously started to collect vinyl. All these records are still standing in my shelf today, close to me. To make it clear, the concept for this mix was not to choose these 100 tracks from the “NOW perspective”, evaluated with my musical knowledge of today. Instead, I wanted to be as authentic as possible by choosing the songs that that ment the world to me as a child. So don’t be surprised when you find lots of cheesy pop songs in there 😉 The 70s for me were a time when the radio was constantly playing at home and when I took every chance to watch the few music shows that existed on TV. Thats why I must have probably heard many of the songs in this mix a 1000 times over in the course of my life, without owning them in vinyl or otherwise. But there is also other music in there, music that I was lucky enough to get introduced to by older friends or friends whose parents had huge record collections, with whom we spent days listening through their selection. Especially all the Afroamerican music, the Soul & R&B of the 70s you will find in this mix, I would have never discovered so early on without the help of others. Thanks to all the people in my life who helped me connect to beautiful music and thank you, MUSIC, for always being there! ❤

Welcome to the highly popular spiritual pilot for The Word Is Love show celebrating Larry Levan’s birthday whom was born on 24th July 1954.

In this show we cover some of the finest signature tracks that were  played by Larry Levan at The Paradise Garage. 

Covering Disco, Funk, Rare Groove, House, Synth-pop, Latin and Soul; you know the drill, non stop easy listening funky disco grooves from start to finish.

To describe Larry Levan here is an article from The Guardian:

"Larry Levan was the first superstar DJ. The first to really convince the world that there was more to DJing than just playing one record after another. For 10 years from 1977 to 1987, Levan was the star attraction at New York’s legendary Paradise Garage, writing himself into clubbing lore with swashbuckling DJ sets that took in minimal underground disco, funky rock, dub and synth-pop, which foreshadowed the house music revolution. At the same time, his uncanny ability to mix and tweak records for maximum emotional impact would regularly send his devoted congregation into raptures."

The mix has been put together using a 'Shooting from the hip' style of cut mixing and blending.

Dip your toes dancing into the funk, disco, and pop sounds of 1980’s Philippines. With influences being drawn from jazz, Latin fusion, bossa nova, 70s American pop, disco, and indigenous folk, two main genres spawned to cover the ballooning number of popular dance music styles hitting the radio - Manila Sound and it’s successor, OPM (Original Philippines Music). 
Manila Sound, pioneered in part by the popular pop/disco band Hotdog, repopularised the use of local Tagalog language over English productions with their catchy melodies and soft fusion of disco, jazz, and funk. Following this, much of Manila Sound and OPM began to write in ‘Taglish’, a mixing of English and Tagalog. "Hotdog, with Ella Del Rosario's beautifully angelic voice streaming through the airwaves during the clangs of martial law, immediately killed colonial mentality in pop music with its phenomenal original music. Influenced largely by Ella's regal societal class and beauty, gated palatial upbringing, her Spanish-American roots, her uniquely tonal and sweetly charming international accent, combined with her private school upbringing, a magnetic charm, affluent mannerisms and English-speaking mannerisms, suddenly it was cool to talk Taglish and listen to a Pinoy pop band.” (Baby Gil, Philippine Star). OPM, the successor Manilla sound, devoted itself moreso to pop music and ballads than the disco and funk scene of its forerunner. It’s important to note that while this genre was drawing crowds, a huge underground scene of Filipino folk-rock, protest music, new wave, and punk rock was also gaining traction. Maybe that’s one for the next mix.

80's Gen X New Waver Mobile Disco/Club Spinner in High School & College; Silicon Valley CA Product Engineering Executive/Solid State Drive Geek; Spent most of my allowances on extended, remixes and hard to find esoteric 12" dance vinyl records, used to frequent record stores in SF Bay Area (Amoeba, Rasputins, Tower, Record Factory, Star, etc.) on weekends and after class.  Still love to visit record stores & dig through bins of used records when i go on business trips. Recorded 100's of mixed tapes for classmates/friends and hours & hours in front of the turntables.
