Snakeoil Jefferson fell for country music in 1981, when he was first exposed to Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. He bought his first Fender Telecaster - the only real choice unless you're a big enough man to hold a Gretsch - on the Melbourne Trading Post in 1982, courtesy of a Commonwealth Bank personal loan. It was a beautiful '70's Thinline - the one with the f-hole? That was the year he recorded the classic "I crashed my truck, I'm out of luck, I need a x?@5", penned by his neighbours the Briggs brothers, in a flat in West St Kilda, and wrote his first song, the seminal "Your beerin', brawlin', guitar playin' days are over". Tragically, no long after that he had to part with the Thinline when he thought (briefly) that his guitar playin' days really were over. His next Telecaster - not a Fender - was purchased brand new from Allans Music in Elizabeth St, Melbourne in 1989. It was white and gorgeous and twangy - but he had to part with it around 1993 due to a certain unpleasantness with prevailing economic conditions. The Telecaster after that - a Fender, black, old, dusty, made in Mexico - was acquired from a long-since-defunct second hand music shop in High St Northcote, around 1997, for $550. This baby saw some serious out of town action - but when it returned from a sabbatical with Snakeoil's young nephew in 2006, its guitar playin' days really were over, courtesy of some busted electronics, a worn out neck and a pickup with no more pickup.

Roll on 2007, when Snakeoil's nephew's father visited the big apple and picked up Snakeoil's first ever, brand new, Fender Telecaster - an american deluxe 3-colour sunburst with white binding, n3 noiseless pickups, s-1 switch to bring the bridge pickup in series with the neck pickup, alder body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, pearl dot inlay..somebody STOP me. In that fateful year Snakeoil ditched his cake shop, survived a corporate takeover, saw his eldest child through year 12 and recorded the seminal and still unpublished album, "The Coolroom Sessions" - in the garage, next to the coolroom where the cakes used to be.

With the beautiful Emma Roberts riding shotgun on vocals, and Snakeoil's partner and family upstairs urging him on to get the job done (and to please finish that song and never play it again), the ten songs that make up the Coolroom Sessions were brought into the universe note by note, chord by chord, drum stroke by drum stroke, instrument by instrument, solo by solo, every note of every song played by none other than Snakeoil himself, with his American Deluxe Telecaster crying into the suburban days and nights for weeks until his fingers were ready to drop, the neighbours were ready to call the cops and his family was ready to call it quits.

He did it all so you could listen to it today - enjoy!
