Premiere: Camea & The Reason Y - Free Yourself From Your Mind - Neverwhere

This event was quite astonishing, unique and amazing. Held in a cathedral in San Francisco pimped out by St Joseph's Art Foundation, I got to DJ from the pulpit. I ain't Christian but I always admired the architecture, acoustics and grandeur of a church.  

Chicago DJ Justin Reid, Mason Bates and their crew at Mercury Soul invited me to play.

Mason is a Grammy award-winning American composer and the first composer-in-residence of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He has also been in residence with Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony, and the California Symphony.

Mason scored a live 20 piece brass ensemble to perform a debut of my song After The Storm after which I got to DJ for an hour.  During this time, I took the liberty of diving into symphonic electronic sounds, disco and African vibes.

Beyond the incredible venue, production, and beautiful collection of humans, there were three things that made set this extra special for me: opening the room to an empty dance floor, having the DJ booth in the center of the room, and playing the most original music I’ve played in a set. 

I rarely get to build a room from zero anymore, so I took great pleasure in playing records early on that are subtler, slowly building tension as people trickled into the venue. Having the booth in the center made it much easier for me to sense what the people sonically needed as the night progressed - we all were locked in for the last hour. 

I also blended the ambient room sounds with the mixer output capture the spirit of the night. You’ll hear the excitement of the crowd match the energy crescendo. When I listen to the set, it almost feels like I’m transported back to the party. 

It a very special gig, and I’m grateful to Robot Heart for having me play.

For pretty much the whole year I’m either headed towards or away from Burning Man. 

Each year out there there’s this moment in space and time where I feel perfectly balanced between the two. It’s a moment where time stands still, just for a second. 

That moment is when the first ember of the day’s sun peaks over the mountain top to begin its journey once more. 

I try to find a piece of music to express the feeling of stillness and presence I get.  This year the sun was kind enough to arrive 1 hour 28 minutes and 40 seconds into this mix. I was in awe. I’m still in awe.

Some of the magic of the playa for me is where the nature blends with boundless creativity. Where love meets wonder and we get to laugh, dance and play. Add a dash of music for good measure and, for a moment, that magic catches its breath to take it all in, and stands still.

2024 was one of my favorite years ever. Thank you to all you artists and lovers, cooks and cuddlers. To all those who toil for months before and after to make it happen and to anyone who gave anything to another. You’re all amazing. I’m currently headed back towards (or is it away from) that moment once more.

Lee Burridge - Robot Heart - Burning Man 2024

Berlin based electronic musician and cellist Chloe Lula presents the LP Oneiris.
Having studied the cello at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and attended music schools up until the age of 18, Chloe gave up her ultra-strict regime of classical training, realising that she saw no future in it for herself — instead immersing herself in community radio, experimental music and techno. Chloe went on to tour the world as a techno DJ and producer, while working as a music journalist in parallel.
