Sterns Edits returns after the sell-out success of its debut edition with another two catalogue reworks from @bengomori. This time he turns his attention to Burkina Faso's much-loved taxi-driver- turned-singer, Amadou Balaké.

Balaké ('porcupine' in Mandinka) is Burkina Faso's proudest musical export, and in 2013 he recorded his final album before passing away: 'In Conclusion'. The record saw him revisit some of his most popular tracks from his remarkable 50-year career, backed by an eight-piece Burkinabé band who took the country's traditional sounds and brought them into a contemporary light.

Gomori retains the essence of the original recordings - which were mostly captured in one take – and marries them to vigorous afro-house stylings. 'Bar Konon Mousso (Musicien C'est Pas Quelqu'un)', in which Balaké tells of a bar lady being unimpressed by his profession, gets a gentle push towards the modern dancefloor, its wonderful sax lines resplendent. 'Massa Kamba' is taken for a drive down the more traditional route, with commanding drums bolstering the original grooves and a marvelous triple harmony brass section at its core. Balaké's freewheeling style suits the hypnotic feel of the edits to a tee.

Balla et ses Balladins were one of Guinea’s national 'orchestras' formed as a result of the newly elected President, Sékou Touré’s 'authenticité' policy of the early 1960s, which sought to promote Guinea's cultural identity following independence from France in 1958.

Gomori takes the scalpel to two cuts recorded during their years on the state-run Syliphone label, making good use of bandleader Balla's lively trumpet playing. The gently haunting 'Nyo' is taken on a stomping slo-mo chug with a head-nodding bassline and stuttering FX creating a shimmering effect on the tropical guitars, while the rousing horns of 'Wilikabo' are laid over with rasping synth bass for a punchy juxtaposition.

The 4th edition in the acclaimed Sterns Edits series sees curator Ben Gomori open up the Sterns Music catalogue to other keen re-editors — with Brownswood / Worldwide genius SMBD (aka Simbad) the first to step up to the plate.

Nigeria's Segun Adewale is sometimes referred to as the 'crown prince' of jùjú music, but in the 1980s he developed a sound all of his own, which we called yo-pop. A mixture of jùjú, funk, reggae, Afrobeat and jazz, its vibrant melange can be heard on his 1986 record 'Ojo Je', where both these originals are taken from. SMBD delivers too superb flips of the title track — a gritty funk-fuelled 'Disco' version with live bass, and a deliciously deep dub-house version. Gomori, meanwhile, takes the haunting 'Atewo-Lara Ka Tepa Mo'se' for an extended hypnotic, tribal trip.

The stunning artwork comes from Kofi Ankobra, the son of radical white South Africans who grew up in Ghana and studied art at Oshogbo, Nigeria — the place Adewale himself was born.

It is from these albums that Gomori has picked two of the biggest, most joyous tracks for he and Jay to work on.

'Sigi Sele' soars with its rousing horn section and Doumbia's impassioned vocal, and makes for excellent dancefloor material. Gomori's main edit keeps the majority of the original intact, chunking it up gently in all the necessary places. His Disco Dub edit hones in on the guitars and trumpets for something more groove-oriented. Tom Jay's rework of 'Djina Mousso' is similarly respectful, coaxing it onto the contemporary house music dancefloor with the minimum of fuss or excess.

Ben Gomori delivers another two carefully-crafted reworks for Sterns Edits, both tried and tested to ensure maximum dancefloor impact.

Guinean guitar master Djessou Mory Kante's blistering style makes for propulsive dancefloor material when paired with a chunked-up house rhythm, with Gomori utilising the stems available to add subtle FX trickery to the intricate melodics of the original. The whole affair builds and rolls in incessant fashion, with another riveting bassline mirroring and counterbalancing the main motifs.

The wild sounds of Senagelese legends Orchestra Baobab's nine-minute-odyssey 'Sibou Odia' is a formidable piece of work that shows the band's stunning musicianship in fine style. With only the original track to work from and no stems, Gomori hones in on the sections where the groove is dominant and the raucous solos potently cut through. The skanking rhythms are intact, with a huge bassline pushing the proceedings forward throughout.

Sterns Edits is a collaboration between legendary African & Brazilian label and distributor @sterns-music and London producer and label owner @bengomori. Supported by the likes of Optimo, Hunee, Benji B, François K, Alma Negra, HAAi and many many more.

Sterns Music began life as pop-up style record shop housed in the back room of an electrical shop near Warren Street and grew to become the second biggest distributor of music from Africa outside of the continent itself. Over the years they released and distributed hundreds of artists, including household names like Salif Keita, Youssou N'Dour, Baaba Maal, Oumou Dioubate and Orchestre Baobab, building a comprehensive catalogue of music from across the region that spans some six decades. Now located inside a former bank vault underneath Warren Street station, they continue to work with a plethora of African labels, in some cases transferring master tapes to make them available digitally for the first time. 

Gomori stumbled across this treasure trove of material when he discovered contemporary Gambian-born, Danish-residing singer and kora player Dawd Jobarteh's propulsive 'Sama Kebbalu' and decided he wanted to create an edit of it for his sets. He decided to see if he could license the track to make for an official release on his label Monologues Records, but soon recognised the bigger opportunity: "I was blown away when I met Robert from Sterns for the first time and he took me down into his vault. Original master reels stuffed into banana boxes, decades of vinyl, cassette tape and CD releases... history everywhere you looked. After exploring their vast catalogue and talking to Robert more, I felt like something could be done to bring some of their music and history into a new context and introduce it to new generations in the process."

Each Sterns Edits release will see Gomori - who has created dozens of much-loved edits of the likes of Marvin Gaye, Leonard Cohen, Sampha and DJ Shadow over the years - rework two tracks from the vast Sterns catalogue, melding these various styles of African music with his own house grooves to make for dancefloor ready weapons.
