First State – Full Circle

In a comparatively short time frame Holland’s Sander van der Waal released his debut album on In Trance We Trance, before changing lanes for the new creative aesthetic of its Magik Muzik follow-up. Now, in 2014, he completes that initial three-album arc with ‘Full Circle’. For this new long-player, the spectrum of Van der Waal’s compound sound becomes ever yet more expansive. Frequency hopping across genre bands - often inside the confines of a single track, it beguiles the audiophile by exploring the EDM route less travelled. The only predictable feature of ‘Full Circle’ is its entire lack of predictability!

Also along for this sonic ride, he’s brought many a standout vocalist, to the album, with performances by international singer-songwriters including Eric Lumiere, Sarah Howells, Relyk, Tyler Sherritt and others. Never knowing exactly what’s around the corner has rarely provided such a thrall-ish, edge-of-the-seat type listening experience!
On the release of his third album, Sander stated: “‘Full Circle’ represents my journey as an artist and song composer, as I feel this album stands for the completion of an era and my development as an artist. With this album I’ve followed my heart and some songs took days while others took weeks or sometimes even months. Even though an album is never finished for a producer until it leaves it’s studio, the same goes for a circle as it has no beginning nor and ending.”

Artistically, ‘Full Circle’ drops its first compass point with the vocoderizing ministrations of ‘I Need Your Love’ - its analogue MOOG-isms bestowing a Mylo-esque driven groove and floor-sense to ‘Full Circle’s onset.

Further in, Sander reunites with the first of several ‘Changing Lanes’ vocal alumni. Paper Aeroplanes front-woman Sarah Howells brings first vocal anthemia to ‘Skies On Fire’, and further in laments the loss of a love supreme on the TKO of ‘Seeing Stars’. Her acoustics initially come accompanied by flecked guitar and pianoforte, before Sander roguishly diverts and subverts them, rolling the snares and space-shot synth lines in underneath.
Another ‘Changing Lanes’ returnee is songstress Kyler ‘Relyk’ England, who etches her soulful burn onto First State’s 3rd. Last heard ruling on Tiësto’s ‘Take Me’ in 2013, she brings her tones and inescapably catchy and empathetic lyrics to ‘Take The Fall’, as Sander stokes the production engine with trance-fired synthery.
Equally accomplished in its vocal-free regions, First State’s instrumentals bring ‘Full Circle’ further sonic grades and shades. An unexpectedly soulful spin to the EDM sound on ‘Lourdes’; old-skool M1 piano uplift on ‘World’s Apart’ and an astonishing sound collage of violins and tech-through-elec grind on ‘Anunnaki’ all interconnect its vocal numbers.

Be in no doubt, the moment you think you have ‘Full Circle’s genre categorized, it will delight in confounding you! Eternally toughened by retro-futuristic chemical FX, ‘Humanoid’ blows back in consciously knockabout fashion to Daft Punk’s ‘Robot Rock’. ‘One Push’ meanwhile aces unchecked frenetic festival-ism: think an on-acid Tangerine Dream or Moroder’s ‘Tony’s Theme’ in a head-on electrode collision with Erol Alkan.
Elsewhere Y chromosome vocalists are every bit as well represented. Across a deuce of tracks, US singer/songwriter Tyler Sherritt further broadens ‘Full Circle’s vocal spread with some indie-rock elements and edges. Introspection, vocal contemplation and lyrical existentialism are quick to hand on ‘Maze’ and ‘I’ll Never Die’. Just as fine is the floor illumination of ‘Glow’, which features the vocals and lyrics of Eric ‘Anthem’/’Love Will Bring It Back Around’ Lumiere.
Drawing on sonic stylistic influences and inspirations from dance music and way, way beyond, ‘Full Circle’ brings a new track collection-come-expedition that through eclectic, amazing tangents and curves, grips the attention from primary beat to terminal point. It’s out March 3rd through Magik Muzik.

Columns of glacial light rose and softened, bulged and narrowed, solving themselves into arches whose lacework changed with thought. Beneath the vesper hush, gardens of pale mushroom basilicas breathed in slow rhythm, their gills printing letters of dew that slid into the floor and were read without eyes.

The industry of electronic dance music as any other music actively develops, opening more and more new artists every day, attracting more fans. One of the 'revelations' of this year in Trance without any exaggeration can be called a talented producer from Russia Roman Messer.

Talent from Russia, that supported, by such a big names as: Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, Aly & Fila, Markus Schulz and others. He is famed by its recognizable style that liked by many people. Working hard by over the two years, constantly experimenting and adding to the style - something new and different - led to the creation of debut album, entitled 'New Life'.

As Solid Stone proudly became the first artist responsible for a full album on Coldharbour Recordings through the release of Introspection, one track in particular captured the immediate and long-lasting attention of fans worldwide - the dark yet touching Heart Call. 

A familiar collaborative voice on previous Solid Stone compositions, his good friend Jennifer Rene shines through the emotions behind the words, with many citing the piece as a contender for track of 2016. t the intersection of house and frisson-thrill trance, you’ll find Stefan Brünig, a producer now infinitely better known under his professional alias… Steve Brian. 

Hailing from the Lower Saxony region, the young German first cut his musical teeth on the renowned Euphonic imprint, quickly and successfully spinning his production profile off into a into a DJ career that seen him in high demand behind the decks throughout his native Germany. Five years down the line and Steve’s DJ’d the world’s A-to-Z - everywhere from Antigua, on the Ministry of Sound’s recent club tour to Russia’s Renaissance Club (and numerous points in between). He’s also expanded his label remit to a host of other highly regarded imprints, most recently signing to Cosmic Gate’s WYM Records. His ‘Time & Time’ debut for the label created instant heat with fans, DJs and the press alike (with MIXMAG scoring it highly and trumpeting: “if you’re after some irrepressibly feel-good music this month, you may well find it here!)”. 

A remixer of consummate skill, scope and imagination, he’s reworked the music of both electronic music and classical composing legends, with everyone from Tiësto to James Horner (Avatar) and Mike Oldfield benefiting from his hyper-imaginative sonic restructures. 

Over a relatively short time, Steve’s amassed a sizeable and impressive discography, which has seen him release his productions through tier-one labels like Armada, Enhanced and Euphonic. With a non-denominational sound and vocal appeal, Steve’s melodies have thus far found him most quickly embraced by trance & progressive fans. MIXMAG said that his ‘Blood & The Wine’ release for Enhanced was “a great vocal defined”, while DJ Mag scored Euphonic’s ‘Neno Itome’ 4/5, describing it as “an express train of thrashing beats, punchy percussion and bouncy bass” and pronouncing it “a whopper”!

Releases like ‘Time & Time’, ‘Fire Sign’, ‘Yaya’, ‘Avocado’ and ‘La Gomera’ have quickly seen him become a go-to guy for many of the electronic music scene’s upper DJ echelon. His music now enjoys consistent deck support from leading trance lights including Armin van Buuren, Above & Beyond & Ferry Corsten, as well as house flamers like Tiësto, W&W & Swanky Tunes. His music has proved every bit as popular on the radio, with ‘Fire Sign’ bagging a Tune of the Week on Armin’s A State Of Trance and ‘La Gomera’ scoring an ASOT Future Favourite and Record Of The Week on Above & Beyond’s radio show. Like many of this others, the tracks enjoyed comparable sales success, both entering the Beatport top 10.

In other studio and music release mediums, Steve is equally versed. In 2010, he released his debut artist album (the 14-track-strong long-player ‘Calera’) through Euphonic and since his earliest productions, he’s been a keen and innovative studio collaborator. This has seen him team up with a range of producers and singers, including ones as diverse as American folk vocalist David Berkeley and Spanish language group Almadrava.

Steve is every bit as adept a remixer as he is a producer. Included among his work are remixes of the massive club hits ‘Live Forever’ by Lange & Emma Hewitt and Alex M.O.R.P.H. ‘From The Universe With Love’. He’s also rebuilt the tracks of many a trance mainstay, Cosmic Gate, Audien, Tritonal, Lange, Andy Moor, Alex MORPH, Kyau & Albert, Ronski Speed among them. Most notably, in 2010 he reinterpreted ‘I See You’ – the James Horner-composed theme from the movie ‘Avatar’ for club floors and the following year reworked ‘Stay Forever’, from shared Tiësto / Showtek project Allure. In Steve also worked with Mike Oldfield on the latter’s revision of his classic ‘Tubular Bells’ album for the release of ‘Tubular Beats’.
