Moving The Needle

Synesthesia is main motif for this song, first because of original lyrics, then as I felt like adding it more flavor with female vocals*, & finally when I recently watched some paintings about this matter**.

*Great vocal performance by https://soundcloud.com/maraoldfield is most notorious matter in this piece, where riffing parts toggle with bass-guided proggy ones.

A diminutive woman in her 7th decade, Laurie is a dynamo of personality and energy living an outsized life as she still works, loves to travel, and when home, playing in our church band as a guitarist and sharing music as a multi-instrumentalist.  She is also a personal hero in how she powered through chemo, invasive surgery, then radiation to arrest the progress of a rare cancer.  She would tell you it was by the Grace of God, but I would quickly add He worked in concert with her faith and "joie de vivre" of which she has an abundance.  Not knowing what to give her for her birthday and Christmas (a month apart), I gave her a song with her band nickname as the title.  For you, "Laurie Lou" my dear friend, guitar sister, and bandmate:)

I was looking out my front window the other day, getting ready to warm up my fingers to play my piano. I sat there watching the weather. It was cold and windy. It wasn't a day that invited you to go outside and enjoy the day. It was January, and springtime with green leaves and flowers were a long way off. I am not a cold weather person. I hibernate in the winter, and don't leave my house unless I have to. As I sat there I started to play a melody with my right hand, and this is the music I recorded that day. If you listen, you will hear the weather - wind, rain, thunder and birds that give you hope and beauty that Spring always follows Winter - every single year. Year after year after year. It doesn't ever get out of order. So I tell myself, "Be patient. Don't wish your life away. It goes by fast enough without wishing Spring were here already." I sigh, and go back to creating music.

This one was lots of fun.  Terry and I exploring some new sounds as always.  We had the idea of merging some blues into his psychedelic soundscape and it went from there. The result is a fusion of Terry's synth driven stylings with some bluesy twang giving us something special.  If you enjoy this one, check out the full Texas Tea playlist. This was written over 10 years ago as a George Formby style (Google the name if you’ve never heard of him) ukulele song - a mildly amusing message to Gal to let him know that I was fully aware of the mental health difficulties he was having and that I would always be there if he needed me.

Over the years, we spoke often about the song but nothing much came of it until Gal suggested slowing the tempo and giving it a kind of shuffle beat. As it was about him, I thought he should definitely sing the lead vocal, which I think works rather well. (*Vocalist’s note: It would help if I could still sing…)

You’ll find many personal references to Gal’s life in the lyrics. At the time it was written, he was 63, literally a fatal age for men in the extended Reeves family and he wasn’t having the best of times himself, still wrestling with the grief of a marriage break-up alongside the loss of his big brother and closest friend less than a year before. But even with all of this going on (and not always out of choice) he found there were plenty more mountains to climb.

The transition of the tune from Formby to Albers is a story in itself but suffice it to say that Hans somehow managed to transform it into this rather poignant opus.  He has also made a beautiful film to accompany the piece (see link above). All in all, it testifies perfectly to the reason why Gal’s cleats are somewhat care-worn...and he still has many mountains yet to climb.. (Terry Reeves)

People, Not Profit (remix)

Haven’t been on the cloud much lately. Been travelling across the southern Australian coastline, to the beautiful and remote Kangaroo Island. Its beauty seemed strangely juxtaposed to the horrors going on elsewhere.

Haunting Moods of Change

I had these two little blues pieces – in E and C – and an arrangement for When I’m 64, and they seemed to fit, and voila! The whole piece runs for 100 bars, but subtracting the repeated two blues sections the piece adds up to 64 bars. I swear this was an accident!
