Victoria Bouloubasis has been covering this part of North Carolina for several years. She's fluent in Spanish, and does much of her reporting in that language. Our decision to use Spanish voices in the episode, which she translates, contrasts with the standard practice of talking over voices that aren't in English.

Reporter Ese Olumhense grew up with her family in the Bronx. Her father, who had immigrated from Africa, moved the family to Westchester when she was young. That's when her childhood asthma disappeared.
This story was partially funded by the Fund for Investigative Journalism, and as you will hear, Olumhense broke new ground by combing through records of where New York City's COVID cases were highest, and cross-referencing them with areas impacted by pollution from the city's highways.
Since the reporting was done during the height of COVID, we improvised sound gathering and reporting techniques, like having the mom keep an audio journal, including giving her son his daily doses of asthma medicine.

Catherine Coleman Flowers may be one of the most visible environmental justice advocates in the country, especially after receiving a MacArthur "genius" grant in 2020. Drawn from several discussions, this episode includes excerpts from her new memoir, Waste, and what we consider to be a relevant digression about how her faith animates and motivates her. Flowers' focus is on improving access to sanitation for poor families in the South, many of whom "straight pipe" their sewage into their back yards.

This lecture, entitled 'Complementarity in the line of fire: The Catalysing Effect of the International Criminal Court in Uganda and Sudan', was delivered at the Lauterpacht Centre on Friday 15th November by Dr Sarah Nouwen, Lecturer, Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge, and chaired by Dr Roger O'Keefe, Deputy Director of the Lauterpacht Centre and Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge.

Of the many expectations attending the creation of the first permanent International Criminal Court, the greatest has been that the principle of complementarity would catalyse national investigations and prosecutions of conflict-related crimes and lead to the reform of domestic justice systems. In a book that came out this month, Sarah Nouwen explores whether complementarity has had such an effect in two states subject to ICC intervention: Uganda and Sudan. Drawing on extensive empirical research and combining law, legal anthropology and political economy, she unveils several effects and outlines the catalysts for them. However, she also reveals that one widely anticipated effect – an increase in domestic proceedings for conflict-related crimes – has barely occurred. This finding leads to the unravelling of paradoxes that go right to the heart of the functioning of an idealistic Court in a world of real constraints.

The Catalysing Effect of the International Criminal Court in Uganda and Sudan'

The gender justice provisions of the ICC's Rome Statute provide better recognition, representation and redress for victims of sexual and gender-based violence than any prior instrument of international criminal law. These provisions have helped draw attention to an often marginalized constituency under international law. However, both in their design and interpretation these provisions have also triggered a contentious gender politics at the ICC, leading some of its other constituents to question the Court's impartiality and legitimacy. This presentation will explore the implications of this political struggle for the future of gender justice at the ICC.

This lecture, entitled 'Gender Justice and Legitimacy at the International Criminal Court', was delivered at the Lauterpacht Centre on Friday, 18 October 2013 by Professor Louise Chappell, Australian Research Council Future Fellow at the University of New South Wales, and chaired by Dr Sarah Nouwen, Lecturer, Faculty of Law, Cambridge.

The Class of 1969 at the High School of Music and Art experienced a senior year unlike any before or since. The school year began in the chaos of a teachers' strike, and ended at our graduation in Carnegie Hall, as we sped into uncertain futures. At the helm was the youngest principal to ever take over a New York City high school, Richard A. Klein. Mr. Klein died on June 27, 2024, at the age of 94. We interviewed him less than 3 weeks before his death, and he remembered us well.
