Solid Steel (27th December) 2013 marked the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel when Matt Black and Jon More from Coldcut started broadcasting together on pirate Kiss FM in 1988. It's been a year long celebration and we'd like to thank all the guests who have contributed incredible mixes throughout the year. To see off the year in style, we asked our listeners to vote for their favourite guest mix from the last 25 years and also their favourite mixes from our resident DJ's, with huge prizes up for grabs.

The guest mix you chose as your favourite from the last 25 years was Bonobo with his 'Directors Cut mix' of his Solid Steel Mix CD release "It came from the Sea", which was first broadcast on the 9th December 2005. It's his 2 hour version of the mix featuring tracks that didn't make the final cut including his own edit of Gang of Four and the brilliant Four Tet edit of Black Unity by Pharoah Saunders.

Up next it's your favourite mix from DK which was his 'Cymatic Frequencies' mix from the 21st January 2011. At the other end of the spectrum to DJ Kentaro last week, Kid Koala has a unique style and we get to hear it with this set recorded 'Live in Victoria on Three Rental Turntables'. Solid Steel in association with Serato (10th July) We're delighted to welcome Prefuse 73 to the show, an artist who has been a firm fixture in the track lists on Solid Steel for many years under his different guises. His EP 'Every Colour of Darkness' is released today on Temporary Residence Ltd (following an album and EP earlier this year) and his mix delves into some choice 90's hip hop. He told us;
"This Solid Steel mix is more of an 'ode' in terms of inspiration. Despite being engaged in a wide scope of music, the majority of these songs reflect what I was listening to in high school & beyond. All of these songs have maintained relevance in terms of important moments in my life. Whether it’s a reminder of where I grew up geographically or straight up youthful nostalgia.
Either way, I’ve explored many avenues as an artist but hip hop ‘is' and always be at the forefront of all my work. 
There probably isn’t a better platform than 'Solid Steel' to put together a mix of some very recognizable & not so recognizable “CLASSICS” - so to speak. 
For the record; Not all_ but many of these songs carry a language of violence among other foul things. Even though I’ve cleaned up some offensive moments, I’d highly suggest putting a NSFW sticker over this mix and not playing it for your kids."

Solid Steel in association with Serato (31st August) 3 years ago Solid Steel DJs Cheeba, Moneyshot and Food had the idea of collaborating on a version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album made entirely from the original sample sources, shortly after Moneyshot aired his mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ album in the same way. 

Finally the result is here, titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ - each of them have taken a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

The mix was over half way completed when they heard the tragic news of MCA‘s death in May so the impetus to finish it was instantly doubled and new meaning given to the project. It goes without saying that this is also a tribute to Adam Yauch and the legacy he left behind and we hope it will be embraced by Beastie fans around the globe.

Then it's two from Leatherette, one via a Dorian Concept remix, tough Brazilian batucada from Alma Brasileira and Forss from 2003. "Shortly after finishing my 2016 album 'The Mountain Will Fall,' I was given the prestigious task of preparing my second Essential Mix for BBC Radio1.  It had been nearly 15 years since my first go-round, so I felt obligated to go all the way in. This first part was all about the new, showcasing my favorite underground beats & stuff.  As with my first Essential Mix, the gears shift radically at the halfway mark, so it seemed to make sense in a streaming context to let this power-hour stand on its own."
