How ridiculous, my father said
No one's used that thing for years

And so I loved my telegraph, Much more than new technology

I have worked the warehouse jobs, Restaurants and office staff
No market to do what I love, To operate a telegraph

I sold off everything I owned, and begged to pay for my next meal

When people say the future's bleak, I smile and dream of a simple past

My mother tells the story from when she was a teen
Growing up in Brooklyn, she had a little dream
To go upstate for college, they'd accepted her and all
But one thing stood in her way of moving out that fall

Chorus: Daddy said no, Daddy said she couldn't go
Daddy wouldn't tell her why
He just sat there while she cried
There was no way without his OK
So she stayed at home, 'cause Daddy said no

My grandmother chimed in and said “He did the same to me.”
Her children were grown and gone, she finally felt free
She took some business classes, she had a job in store
But just one thing held her back, standing in the door (to CH)

My mother got married and had two kids of her own
She moved three thousand miles away from her Brooklyn home
She was a high school secretary for 20 years, a librarian for 10
I think about her road not taken and what she could have been
