I love when an artist creates a song with no actual "traditional" percussion (yeah, I know that the piano is supposed to be a Percussion instrument), but instead lets the natural percussiveness of other instruments lay down the rhythmical brick-work instead...  :D

Flawless Victory

'Strong' is a song I wrote after a policeman instructed me to leave a city’s shopping street while I was working as a street artist. I was so… can I say ‘pissed’? So I had to write a song about it. This was 1992. I played the streets a couple of years when I was a student.

The lyrics of the song (below) point to a broader and still current subject. Staying strong in dynamic times is important for every one of us I think. Today more than ever probably. Follow your personal believes in peace all :)

La Gagne (come on ! )(Remastered)

This song is entitled "First In My Heart" because it was the first new song I created in 2012. It has never been heard or developed until now in 2021. It has been in a vault of songs that no one has ever heard. This song helped me to get back to writing music.

Many years ago (at the age of 21), I started dating this really cool girl. A few weeks into the relationship, I naturally wanted her to know me better, so I decided to share one of my favorite hobbies. One evening, with precision gaming Fung Shui, I configured the dining room table for an optimized evening of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons; and I began an adventure for her and a few of our friends. I thought it was going well. But unfortunately, after a few sessions, she indicated she wasn’t too hip on my ’mind-numbingly tedious, micro-rules’ play-style (apparently not all people enjoy having the spontaneity squeezed out of an exciting moment, while the Dungeon Master rummages through the rulebooks). It was a hard lesson to learn. My love of gaming rules and nano-details was not as fascinating (or sexy) as I first imagined.

Fast forward 30 years. That girl (despite having a great deal of common sense), is still sitting by my side. And although I was never able to amaze her with the ‘pen and paper’ world of gaming (a hobby that now resides exclusively with our oldest daughter); we both love geeking out over the latest video games. I’ll take that. :D

Interestingly though… one D&D concept stuck. And she recently told me she uses this in real life… and on a regular basis. It is the idea of ‘disbelieving’, as a conscious action (choosing to see past the illusion before you). Seems like a strange idea, I know. But in a fantasy world, that’s how you get past the illusionary dragon guarding the treasure; or avoid the siren song lulling you to your doom. 

And ya know what? She’s right. Disbelief is actually a cleverly disguised life practice awaiting our usage. 

Am I suggesting we can disbelieve ourselves right out of the visible illusion? Pop from the Holo-Deck? Probably not (but I’m not sure about that yet). One thing we can do is disbelieve that it has to be this way; that we have to be this way.

Navigating this life requires a certain willingness to commit to the agreed upon illusion. Every day, we wake up into this man-made idea (and lets face it, this really is the product of men, not women). Every day, we watch our fears grow… “I gotta secure mine. Cuz there isn’t enough to go around”. We find ourselves fighting over the strangest of things (see: COVID Toilet Paper Days). And depending on which side of the fence you occupy, it is absolutely undeniable… the other side is out of their minds, and entirely to blame. It’s a mighty convincing illusion; and I honestly spend way too much time lost in it.

But that’s just it. I’m tired of being lost in the illusion. Believing in the current illusion requires a strong investment in fear. And I don’t have the strength for that anymore. I suspect many of you feel the same way. So for just a moment (or perhaps 24 hours a day), let's play with the idea of disbelieving this is all there is. Disbelieving is a great way to see past the illusion. And when the dragon disappears… we can finally get to the treasure.

This is the first track of a new instrumental project I've entitled "It's All Greek to Me", as I explore the myths and legends of Ancient Greece. 

I'm using Ancient Greek instruments featured in the 'Ancient Worlds VST Library from Big Fish Audio', underpinned with classical orchestral instruments.  There are some very interesting sounds in it that do seem to evoke a time long ago. 

Since the project is based around some of the myths and legends of Ancient Greece, I wanted a generic opening track that would introduce the listener to some of the sounds and set an overall tone for the project. I really wanted a different feel from a typical 'all guns blazing' modern film score since it isn't accompanying live action but is hopefully a piece in its own right. 

So a piece with the title "A Time of Heroes" seemed like a good idea to kick off the project. :-)

Instrumentation Used

Lyre - it was one of the most important and well-known stringed instruments of Greek Antiquity.

Kithara - this was considered the “professional” instrument of antiquity, and the public highly regarded kithara players.

Kavali - this is a chromatic end-blown flute traditionally played throughout Armenia, the Balkans, Greece, and Turkey. 

Flogera - is a type of flute used in Greek folk music. It is a simple end-blown bamboo flute without a fipple, which is played by directing a narrow air stream against its sharp, open upper end. It typically has seven finger holes.

Water Pumpkins - also called “Water Drums” these instruments can be found in Africa (Mali) and other continents. Water Pumpkins are played with the hands or with soft mallets. They usually come in pairs and have a diameter of 32 - 36 cm. The deeper bowl is filled with water, the smaller one is set on the water. The pitch of the water drums can be tuned by changing the water level inside the floating shell.

Antique Cymbals - are the ancestors of the modern metal cymbals. During the Minoan period, they arrived on the island of Crete from Asia.

Pan Flute - this is an ancient instrument, associated with the demigod Pan, who was the protector of the woods and the shepherds. Variations of the instrument used a number between three and eighteen pipes. The classic Greek Pan Flute used pipes of the same length.

Dan Blackard says.  I was thinking of what to write for this track while sitting in the parking lot at 4:30 in the morning. When for no particular reason visions of my youth and things I vaguely remember started to just flash into my mind. I almost just let the thoughts go. But, some of the memories seemed vivid. The commercials, tv shows and many of the things that, for only the briefest of times, meant a great deal to me.  And then I realized that my head was actually telling me that this was the song. Or, it's more than possible that I was half asleep😆.
