The music for Lady of Fire's poetry almost writes itself. Everyone who reads my descriptions knows how much I appreciate working with her. This track is no exception. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed composing and producing the track.

Here we have David Carter smashing it on drums, Jim Sanders adding a sprinkle of tamborine, Leon Carter with the juicy bass, Dave Toolan with the guitar chops, Jonny Rabbs with the peels of harmonica, and a slice of acoustic guitar and grated vocals from myself!

Compost Heap

Take the watercress, that’s past it’s best, and the mouldy old sprouts,
The cabbage and the baggage of disappointments and doubts,
Every surreal ordeal, and the way it made you feel,
chuck it in the bucket with the old potato peel.

Soggy lettuce that upset us, and the unused courgettes,
Got forgotten and went rotten filling us with such regrets
The only way to move on, to forgive and to forget…
is to tear up some old newspapers… mix some dry in with the wet…

Take the melon seeds and fantasies, and avocado skins,
The fallen leaves and garden weeds, and seven deadly sins,
Put the rhubarb in the garbage, dump the pumpkin in the bin,
Ditch the spinach you didn’t finish, discard the chard you didn’t begin

Dispose of all those promises, sealed with a kiss
Dispense with senseless memories of momentary bliss
Declarations with carnations, guilty pleasures, must away
Recriminations, indignations, wilted flowers have had their day

Sling the beetroot and the jackfruit and the funky furry grapes
Boot the absolutes and old disputes, like scrapings off your plate.
Fling the incredibly inedible out of date dates
with the mis-haps, misadventures, misdemeanours, and mistakes.

Hurl the curly kale if it’s stale, no more ifs or buts
Get over all your losses, leftovers and off-cuts
top and tail the carrots, hellos and goodbyes
Toss the possibilities that were never realised

The tit for tat, bitter battles, and diplomatic talks
chitter chatter, it’s organic matter like broccoli stalks!
Like a rancid lime, the time has come for anger and for blame,
To be consigned like putrid pride and slimy lumps of shame

If a failure could derail ya then it’s time to get well shot
bad behaviour, manual labour, and all that bloody rot
Black bananas, psychodramas, and shrivelled up shallots
Gone bad, gone off, gone sad and soft,
Toss the bloody lot

Compost Heap

A complete re-recording in the key played live. It was one of those recordings that sounded really messy. Dropping the fader on the acoustic guitar I'd started the whole thing off with revealed a different direction highlighting case and drums. It's about females who stand up for the community against arrogance and male chauvinism and I see them in my work environment - this song is about them..

I was struck by an article in the Guardian 10 years ago about a woman who used to hang out and work with the Rolling Stones in the 60s and the article was about adapting to old age while having nostalgia for such a potent time in her life. For this recording I had to change one word - 70 to 80. Musically it needed to be rhythmic but melancholic: something you got from major and minor seventh songs in the mid 70s as disco kicked in

Dave Cooper sent me the lyrics and I had a tune in my head , with help from Kim on backing vocals we all came up with this , we do hope you like it ! The 3 of us have a really good Country Rock song out in a couple of weeks . Next up is a real rocker me and Kim adopted from Skippy ( Mary Augustson ) followed by a lovely song with lyrics by Tony Harris with an Easter theme . Charlotte and I have just finished a beautiful song , so that will be out soon as well as a great track that's being put together with Gaz , plus more from me and Kim and soon to put a song together written by David Dunham with Axel Menningen doing what he does best ! Phew , I need a holiday !

I always wanted to make a sonic companion to the last song Bitzone, Frawstakwa, and I made together, “What Difference Does It Make.” I finally got my chance. This one came together real fast. Bitzone sent me a raw beat, I asked Frawstakwa to kick it off, and then I made some arrangement adjustments and laid down my lyrics and vocals based on Frawstakwa’s. Bitzone then finished it up and bada-boom, gotta move, gotta shake!

Massive thanks to Frawstakwa for bringing the fresh ideas and original verse and chorus vocals. And big thanks to Bitzone for always make the tracks more vivid than I could imagine.

A dear friend asked me if I wanted to set one of his poems to music. Well, I did. And this is what came out of it...

The title of the poem is “Augenblick”, which means "moment", but literally “blink of an eye”.

Jerry Reed- I have his autograph on my old Takemine that is just about faded out.  Jerry was just inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame this year.  Love this man and his music.  I have tried to play his claw type of fingerpicking, but it is so difficult and so many types of tuning.   I dropped my guitar down 1/2 step and played in drop D tuning.  The best I can do is to try and capture a little of his style

Playing live and writing & recording in Nelson New Zealand - began recording in 2004 once technology was available to make CDs using industry standard equipment at home. Radio airplay on Fresh FM and the TLC network from 2005. The track IS THIS WHO I THINK IT IS was a finalist in the 2009 NZ MLT songwriting contest.  In Dec 2012  DUNEDIN SOUND reached  no. 26 on NZ on Air "The Audience" chart. In December 2015, RIP OFF THE SCAB and DREAM DESTINATION were selected by a US A&R agent for promotion to artists, In July 2017 - HIGHEST ROOM also picked up by a US agent for promotion. July 2018 DON'T YOU TURN AWAY selected by NY agent to promote to a London soul singer. August 2018 LOVE MY LIFE assigned to BuyNZ audiovisual advertising. December 2018 WHERE CIGARETTES FALL forwarded by Taxi.com to US TV music director. Latest 3 albums seek to marry singer songwriter Imagery with multi-harmony musical movement. 2024 FLOATING INTO WONDER and ECCENTRICITY SO BEAUTIFUL got airplay on a New Foundland radio station. Dec 24 FAKING IRONY and CAUGHT UP IN A WAR have have gotten a foothold in Spotify.
