in late December 2015 my father-in-law was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and moved in with me, my wife and 3 children. For the next 15 months I witnessed a man fight like I've never seen a man fight before. With all odds against him, doctors telling him he had weeks to live, he pressed on and proved them wrong. I wrote this song during that time that he lived with us. I look back now and realize how much I admired his perseverance, his will to live, his belief that he would beat it "when I'm done with this cancer" he'd say. I didn't realize that this song was about that until after he passed in March of 2017. That's what I love most about writing music. We miss you Rick!

Broken Pearls

Every year I try to make a little song to commemorate remembrance day in November. The month of August is also historically significant, though.  In August 1914 the massed cartoon insanity of old-world braided huffing and puffing empires slammed into stark reality when over the course of a few days: Germany declared war on Russia, France and Belgium; Britain declared war on Germany; Austria-Hungary declared war on Russia; France and Britain declared war on Austria-Hungary; Japan declared war on Germany; and Austria-Hungary declared war on Belgium. Dear God.

Herbert Burden was one of many young men who decided to do “the right thing” and lied about his age to enlist.  He endured 10 months of fighting, shelling and gas attacks in the front line trenches in France, lost many friends and was himself eventually hospitalised.  On discharge from hospital his battalion received orders to return to the front line.  Herbert went AWOL and was found at a neighbouring regiment where he said he had gone to comfort a friend who had lost a brother in the fighting.  

Herbert became the youngest British soldier to be executed by firing squad for desertion.  

He was seventeen years old, alone, given no defence at his trial, blindfolded, arms tied behind his back, lashed to a post and shot at dawn on 21st July 1915.

God rest his soul.

The picture is of a statue of Herbert which stands at the British National Memorial Arboretum as part of an installation to commemorate the 306 of their own soldiers executed by the British Army during WW1.

I felt this needed to be done raw in one take so please excuse the rough edges.

Camphor dreams through ether prayers
Uniformed boys mustard gas swirls
Just seventeen, mere child's nightmares.
Discarded toy, of broken pearls.

Weeping crows in ¾ time
Belie the crown, lay down to die.
Wreaths below, left countersigned
Head bowed down, blindfolded eyes.
Hot leaded hopes absolve the rich
Salvo thunder suspends our world
On posted ropes slumped heroes twitch
And rent asunder our broken pearls.

In Dec 2012  DUNEDIN SOUND reached  no. 26 on NZ on Air "The Audience" chart. In December 2015, RIP OFF THE SCAB and DREAM DESTINATION were selected by a US A&R agent for promotion to artists, In July 2017 - HIGHEST ROOM also picked up by a US agent for promotion. July 2018 DON'T YOU TURN AWAY selected by NY agent to promote to a London soul singer. August 2018 LOVE MY LIFE assigned to BuyNZ audiovisual advertising. December 2018 WHERE CIGARETTES FALL forwarded by Taxi.com to US TV music director. Latest 3 albums seek to marry singer songwriter Imagery with multi-harmony musical movement. 2024 FLOATING INTO WONDER and ECCENTRICITY SO BEAUTIFUL got airplay on a New Foundland radio station. Dec 24 FAKING IRONY and CAUGHT UP IN A WAR have have gotten a foothold in Spotify.
