Meet Superhero Killer.

SuperheroKiller is the brainchild of Donald Williams--lead vocal, songwriter, and soulclapping bass. Yet, Superhero Killer’s heart is that it’s essentially a four instrument rhythm section, grounded by the solid drumming of the indelible Grover Stewart Jr. Jesse Gannon’s keys take you to church, swelling the groove to a foot-stomping, neck-snapping revival, while Jay Summers’ quest for that perfect tone peppers the funk, accents the pocket, and soars as lead guitar.

On that solid bedding, add Williams' voice, full, warm, and confident.

Williams’ skill singing while playing bass seems effortless, as he breezes through the phrasings. His raspy middle tenor is more D’Arby than Mayfield, and gives him the range for easy harmony. As recorded and performed, his voice is subtle, with an expressiveness built for conveying as much truth in emotion as a good conversation.

And a live set is where they are at their best.

This deep-soul quadrumvirate--Summers, Gannon, Williams and Stewart--can get as bluesy and brooding as a dusty speakeasy, dripping with sweat on a hot August night. They effortlessly hop from original material to a soul standard or a blues cover, and back. Whether low and rumbling or bright and bouncy, the performance is seamless, the cadence always right, and the stage throbs with the heavy funk of a Sissy Strut.

Soul is as Soul does, absorbing and shedding styles at will.

And Superhero Killer is, as Williams would say, “just a Soul band.” But with their combined decades on stage and a wide swath of genres and instruments in their collective background, Superhero Killer could be as easily described as “Anystage Killer,” too.

After four years of silence, instrumental metal standard bearers Pelican have come thundering back, with Forever Becoming, an eight-song album destined to be considered one of the most punishingly rewarding albums of the year. 

Before their hiatus, the group had laid a sizeable chunk of the groundwork for the instrumental metal scene that’s come into its own in the 13 years since they started playing together. After 2009 the band found itself slightly adrift, and found the day to day struggle of being full-time underground musicians colliding with new families and non-musical careers. Wisely, they didn’t make any rash decisions, and as suits a band known for making dense, meditative sounds they simply patiently figured out how to move past their obstacles.

This reborn Pelican is purer, more focused, and far more assured. Recorded at Electrical Audio in Chicago with engineer Chris Common, and featuring The Swan King guitarist Dallas Thomas (replacing the amicably departed Laurent Schroeder-Lebec) Forever Becoming is an immense, speaker-rattling meditation on the infinite cycle of death and life. It takes a lot of experience and a lot of confidence to attempt a head-on ascent of the biggest, most monolithic theme in art, but Forever Becoming is proof that Pelican has plenty of both, and knows how to wield them.

Jeff Batson is a Nashville-based singer/songwriter originally from the St. Louis suburb of Cahokia, Illinois. He developed a strong regional following playing the clubs around metropolitan St. Louis before relocating to Nashville in 1997. Some of his more notable engagements include opening for artists such as Hank Williams, Jr., Keith Urban, Tracy Byrd, Collin Raye and rock 'n' roller, Gary U.S. Bonds. The St. Louis Post Dispatch once called him "a natural frontman." 

Jeff's numerous radio and television appearances through the years include a performance on TNN’s Prime Time Country and a reenactment role in an episode of The Discovery Channel's "New Detectives." Since relocating to Nashville, Jeff has concentrated on his songwriting while continuing to perform both with his band and at songwriter’s events.

As a songwriter, Jeff has over 40 cuts by other artists to his credit including the title cut on Tracy Lawrence’s Grammy-nominated gospel release, “The Rock,” and success on the Texas Music Chart with Texas artist/writer Jamie Richards, who took their songs “Wasted” and “Last Time ‘til the Next Time” inside the Top 10. His firefighter tribute song,“Don’t Call Me a Hero,” has received acclaim from the firefighting community around the globe, and “That’s a Winner,” his tribute to late St. Louis Cardinal’s announcer Jack Buck, remains a St. Louis baseball fan favorite. Two of his songs, “Make a Wish” and “Hometown Heroes,” were released as singles by Laura Bryna on her Equity Records project; “Hometown Heroes” was used by the Air National Guard in a national promotion that included both television and radio commercials.

Jeff possesses an authentic gift for songwriting, and he sings with passion that makes his music satisfyingly void of routine mediocrity. His work as both a writer and performer will excite any fan of good honest music.
