Comprised of four violin concertos written by Antonio Vivaldi in 1723, The Four Seasons is probably the Baroque composer's best-known work. Each of the four concerti is based on a sonnet —supposedly written by Vivaldi himself. Each sonnet is divided into three sections (fast, slow, fast), which correspond with the three movements in each concerto. SUMMER SONNET
1st Movement ("Summer") Allegro non-molto
Under the harsh season's blazing sun, men and flocks languish and pines are scorched. We hear the call of the cuckoo, followed by sweet songs of the turtle dove and finch. Gentle western breezes blow...until the ominous north winds suddenly sweep them away. The little shepherd sobs in fear of the violent storm...and his destiny.
3rd Movement ("Summer") Presto
Alas, his worst fears are realized, as huge hailstones fall from the roaring heavens, cutting the heads from the proudly standing grain.

Santoor (also spelled as Santour or Santur) is the Persian dulcimer played with two light hammers (mezrâb) by striking the strings. Santoor’s origin goes a long way back until the ancient Babylonian and neo-Assyrian eras. Santoor’s contemporary versions are used in Iran, its neighbouring countries and in Greece. It occupies an important place in the traditional Iranian orchestra, it is also used in motrebi (music for entertainment). Santoor has a case made of walnut wood in the shape of a trapeze.

In 1913, Vachel Lindsay wrote “General William Booth Enters into Heaven.” It speaks of the founder of the Salvation Army. Peggy Noonan cited this poem in a recent column. In 1914, Charles Ives set the poem to music. You will hear it in this episode. Also a Beatles concerto (yes), a rag by an early Metropolitan Opera soprano (yes), some American standards, and, at the end, transcendent Mahler. Jay plays off a good amount of reader mail. An amazingly eclectic, interesting episode.
