I Can't Express My Rage

NGADM Finals!

The title is referring to a metaphorical battle, not a literal one. The fight against insecurity and complacency.

4.5 days, 40 hours, 5 cups of coffee, 3 Ableton crashes, 900 patterns (but most of them are drum slices - probably something closer to 200 unique patterns), and an uncountable amount of automation.

Notes

0. Before even bothering to read this, go check out Steampianist's stuff. It will bowl you over.
1. Welp, it's the last round. I was listening to the final round pieces from last NGADM and I was like "dang, these are amazing," and I wanted to do something special because it's the final round. So I took my electronica ideas from before and added EVEN MORE NOTES. Then I made everything explode. Then I automated literally every parameter of everything. 
2. I am so pleased with this song. I would call it my favorite, and I'm so glad that I was able to enjoy this piece in particular (since it's a contest piece and all) so much. For a long time I thought it was only okay, but I kept pushing on it and pushing on it. 
3. 2:37 is probably my best melody. 
4. I came up with that melody at 2AM, like 4 hours before the deadline, and it made the whole song fall together. Why can't this sort of thing happen earlier?!?
5. All sounds synthesized by me in the second half. In the first half I'm just using some stock famitracker waveforms. :) 
6. If you're hearing random white noise, that's because I'm using the demo version of dblue glitch. LOL. I'm poor. ;.;
7. By day 4 this song was invading my dreams. 
8. I've noticed a really curious pattern in my NGADM songs: the longer I've spent working on them, the shorter they are. This pattern is 100% accurate. I spent the least time on the traveller and the most time on this song. 
9. I probably spent more time on 3:21 - 3:33 than any other part in the song. Getting those glitches to work correctly was really difficult. 
10. If someone woulda told me that I would make it all the way to the finals when I first started NGADM, I would have laughed at them. I wasn't even sure if I would make auditions.
11. WHEN ARE YOU MODS GONNA ADD THAT CHIPTUNE SECTION JESUS
12. One final thank you to the judges for making this awesome event happen. Judges, if you are ever in San Francisco, PM me and I'll buy you a beer. Or coffee or whatever. (I'm starting to realize that burying this in a tl;dr wall of text is probably not the best idea.)

P.S. One last story, and then I'll stop talking. Promise.

When I was working on my NGADM2 piece "inside the machine" my 10 year old cousin was in the same house and wanted to know what I was working on. I told here I was writing a song, so she naturally wanted to listen to it. But I was like "pff she won't like this crazy electronic thing", so I played her another song I wrote called Market Town which is nice happy orchestral.
But she wasn't having any of it because she knew that wasn't the song I was working on. So I played her the actual song, still not expecting her to like it at all. She was quiet when she listened to it, and when it was over she was like "wow, this is like crazy alien music!" She spent the rest of the night making weird alien noises.

This is one of my first experiments with the amazing Famitracker, a sound tracker made for creating NES/Famicom music.
Very useful and funny to create Videogames music but also for reinterpret every genre of music.

I've been loving Queen since my childhood, and I totally go crazy for Brian May's overlapping guitar style. "Procession" is one of the most amazing album intros ever. So this is my "chiptune tribute" to one of the greatest bands in the multiverse.

I like this song solely because it is in an odd time signature; 10/8 is pretty strange but it does sound hella good.

Despite this being able to run on almost any YM2413, I made this using the Famicom's VRC7 chip, which is a trimmed-down YM2413, which itself is a cost-reduced YM3812. Crazy, huh.

Just a little chiptune rendition of the amazing theme song for the show Steven Universe that I sequenced together a while back using the program FamiTracker. This is the very first song I've ever put together using it, and I still have a lot to learn, so please give me the benefit of the doubt if it kind of sucks. ;)

Steven Universe- We Are The Crystal Gems! (8-Bit chiptune cover)

Here's a little pet project I've been working on- I absolutely love Billy Joel, and I've wanted to cover a song of his for the longest time... Ha!

This cover starts out as a fairly standard cover of the original song, with some harmonies pretty close to the A cappella version and not a whole lot of anything crazy, but after the beginning of the first verse I decided to take a few liberties and give it a really "bouncy" feel, with the noise track and some noticeably different chord progressions mixed in. I feel like it gives it a somewhat nostalgic feeling, as it makes it slightly reminiscent of some of the more chipper, upbeat songs you would hear in NES games such as DuckTales and Startropics. :)

This chiptune is by no means complete- I haven't gotten through the entire song yet, and even in what I have there are some aspects that could probably use some tweaking, like the harmony of some of the backing. I wanted to upload what I had so far to SoundCloud because it's one that I'm actually quite proud of, personally- I honestly think that this is one of my better ones that I've created thus far, and I'm real fond of it considering that I only started really putting time and effort into it just yesterday. I have plenty of other Famitracker songs that I've created and never finished that I'm sure I'll be uploading sometime in the future, but for now, what do you guys think of this one?

Billy Joel- The Longest Time (8-Bit Mini Chiptune)

Alright, important things first: a few days ago, I reached 1k views/listens on this account. Feels crazy, to say the least. Going from 10 views in March last year to more than 20 times as many this month, when there's even a week left... Incredibly humbling. Can't thank you all enough.

... Makes me a bit sad I didn't have anything special prepared for the occasion. Have just been in a Puyo music mood recently (even though I haven't actually played the games in months) and thought I'd make an arrange of this song. Even though it's the theme song of a character who hasn't shown up in years, I think it would fit really well as a general battle BGM considering how frenetic Puyo tends to be on that level.

Should probably note that while I'm not too keen on how this album art turned out, it would probably be a good idea to keep at it for future uploads. Adds a bit of interest to the screenshot, doesn't it?

Another Famitracker chip tune cover of a song- this one being the /I C O N I C/ 80s jam "Take On Me." I started this one quite a while back, and it's sort of unfinished, but I just recently got it to a point where I felt it was good enough to upload in some form. I had quite a bit of difficulty with the ending in particular- even the final product I'm honestly not entirely confident in to be honest. But other than that I had a ton of fun making this one! I think it turned out pretty well too. What do you guys think?

A-ha– Take On Me (8-bit chiptune cover)

Here's yet another chip tune cover of a boppin' 80s hit song- this one being "Karma Chameleon" by Culture Club. I got the idea to do this song earlier today in school, and started working on it immediately after I got home. And so, after around 4 or so hours, this is what I produced. I'd daresay this is one of the best Famitracker compositions I've created yet- I put a lot of complexity and effort into making all of the harmonies match up, and I think it came out really damn well. The only part that's really particularly weak is sort of the ending, which was admittedly a bit rushed- I forgot to add the bassline in one part, which is... embarrassing... But still, how do y'all think I did? Let me know in the comments below.

Culture Club- Karma Chameleon (8-bit chiptune cover)

An old cover i did of Yata Misaki's theme from the K project anime released back in like... 2011-2012. I was crazy into this show years ago and wanted to cover a bunch of the music from the soundtrack. All i could cover it in was Famitracker, through... which isnt the easiet. Still sounds pretty good for covering a song that was originally pretty rock-y.

Made using a Winebottled version of FamiTracker on a MacBook Pro. I had a lot of fun making this, as 50s doo-wop is one of my favorite genres of music- and this is one of my favorite songs in that genre! I'm really proud of it as well, as the backing chord harmonies are a lot more rhythmically complex than a lot of my previous 8-bit covers. I created the thumbnail image using a crappy online image editor, and the custom Mario sprites were also made by me. More like "Heart of BITS"... eh? ehhh??

Made through Famitracker using the VRC6 module in probably less than 12 hours. I actually started working on this a month or so ago, but I just sort of gave up on it after like 5 minutes. Today I ran into it again on my laptop and decided "eh... why not?" so I cranked the rest of it out throughout the course of today. Blondie has to be one of my favorite early new wave bands alongside The Police, so this was a fun one to work on. Hope you all enjoy it! Created this in FamiTracker via the VCR6 module, and within the span of around 4-6 hours during school and at home instead of doing homework. Most of my other covers I've published have been of older pop songs from the 50s-90s, so it was interesting to take a shot at a more contemporary- no less really fun doing one of my favorite songs from the past year. I decided to try some new stuff with this one– particularly using custom-made DPCM samples for the "I'm the baaaaad guy... Duh!" part. I also made a bit of a bold move and decided to use the triangle section for the main melody in the chorus instead of the bass part like it's usually used for, which I think paid off surprisingly in the end. This was a fun cover to work on, and I'm proud of how clean-sounding it ultimately turned out. I know I probably think this about every latest chiptune remix I make, but I'd have to consider this my best, or at least one of my best covers I've made in the past 2 or so years. Hope you enjoy it!!

Here's an NES-styled rendition of one of my favorite songs ever! Seriously, love Whitney Houston... but anyways, this one's been a a bit of a long time coming. I started it back at the beginning of the year (before the pandemic happened of course), and posted a few infrequent updates to r/chiptunes on Reddit. I actually finished it a couple of months ago, but I've just procrastinated a ton in terms of actually uploading it. Either way, here it finally is– let me know what you think of it! I put a ton of effort into making it one of my best FT covers yet, and I have to say I'm super proud of how it turned out in the end.
