Examples of a few custom wavetables. They are created algorithmically within Csound. The first section features harmonic & inharmonic partial wavetables, the second uses a single wavetable derived from noise (random numbers). With both sections there are no filters used or any modifications except some reverb - it's straight wavetable playback. There is slow random modulation of the fundamental pitch on some of the noise table notes, via the instr, but all other amp/freq mod that can be heard are inherently generated by the tables.

Custom wavetables example (see description)

Another custom wavetable created with random lengths of exponential/logarithmic segments. 64 tables/frames, 2048 samples. However the UDO can create a wavetable of any user-defined number of tables & samples (table size). Generally the table size should be a power of two as some random tables are created with a little FFT modification. There are no filters used or any other modifications (no AM, PM, PWM or effects) except added reverb. This example is a single sustained note.

“The Living Ocean” is a piece inspired by Stanislaw Lem’s “Solaris”. I was struck by the humans encounters with the living ocean on the planet, their fascination and draw into it, and their utlimate inability to rationalize and understand it. Their experiences often left them with more questions than answers, not only about the living ocean, but also themselves and the nature of their own existence.

For me, the story of “Solaris” holds many parallels to the experience of art that I search for when composing. Listening: drawn in, fascinated, the rational mind at rest, only an irrational experience is left. Afterwards: awe, questions about the work, questions for myself, curiosity.

В мире находится около 6800 "живых" языков. Каждую неделю в мире умирает по одному языку. Язык умирает, когда он перестаёт передаваться от одного поколения другому. Существует несколько причин умирания языка. Язык может начать ветвиться и разделяться на многие наречия, и так корневой язык может "потеряться" в языках-потомках. Также малый язык народа может быть поглощён государственным языком, если народ
живёт на территории большего государства.

Язык - это уникальный слепок местности, культуры, это попытка
понять окружающий мир, попытка передать другому картину восприятия мира. И в каждом языке мы находим игру неповторимых сил, уникальную комбинацию стихий, повлиявших на развитие языка. Язык формирует фильтр нашего восприятия, определяет общность народности. Так у людей окружённых снегом есть множество имён для обозначения нюансов снежной стихии, также санскрите есть множество нюансов обозначения состояний ума, которые трудно передать в других языках. Если у нас нет слова для обозначения явления, часто мы не замечаем само явление. Со смертью языка, нас покидает уникальный способ познания мира. Каждый народ через призму языка по своему воcпринимает реальность.

Поэтому очень важно стараться сохранить язык. Ведь потеря языка для народа это первый шаг к потере самобытности, потере культуры. К сожалению, сейчас эта проблема стоит достаточно остро. Глобализация катком проходится по культурам "малых народов". Дети не хотят разговаривать на языке своих отцов и дедов. Порвав с прошлым, они хотят поскорее ворваться в такой красивый мир фильмов и роликов ютуба. Мы получаем стандартный язык общения, упрощаем диалог между совсем разными народами. С другой стороны мы теряем ценный опыт адаптации к среде, свой способ общения с природой. В этом мы теряем в гибкости и всё больше и больше отрываемся от природы, замыкаемся в чисто человеческом или теперь уже технологическом мире.

Мы всё больше и больше сужаем горизонт восприятия реальности. Чем уже горизонт восприятия тем меньше мы видим. И вот мы идём вслепую. А не к обрыву ли мы идём, лишая воздуха малые языки? В этом треке мы предлагаем вашему вниманию записи из "погибших" языков. Они были воссозданы учёными и в музыке вы найдёте отголоски древних   ивилизаций. Пусть мы не знаем значения этих слов, но через вибрацию мы можем немного приобщиться к совершенно другим способам восприятия мира и посмотреть на мир другими глазами. Впустив напевы древних языков в наше сердце, мы можем расширить границы нашего осприятия.

Alive language (with Pravin)

I composed this piece algorithmically using a recurrent iterated function system operating on notes, times, instrument assignments, and chords.

I rendered the piece entirely in Csound using a variety of instruments by me, and by other people and adapted by me. The instruments are all direct synthesis, there is no sampling or processing of recorded sound.

The entire piece, including the Csound orchestra, is a C++ program.

Zen Rock Garden

I've recently discovered (at long last) the music of Danish composer Per Nørgård. He developed a compositional techniques based on what he called the "infinity series", which is a simple formula for developing a series of numbers based on an interval such as a minor second. The series takes the initial interval and then slowly expands upon it both upwards and downwards in pitch, getting broader in scope as it progresses. This idea can be used to generate melodies, rhythms, or other aspect of a composition.

I decided to try playing around with this, but applying it to microtonal intervals, using Csound and a Python script to generate the Csound score according to the series. I ended up with this brief study, which takes the first 256 terms of the series and applies it to three of my favorite intervals simultaneously:
 - 9/8 (major whole tone from the 9th harmonic)
 - 11/8 (unidecimal tritone,from the 11th harmonic)
 - 7/4 (septimal minor seventh, from the 7th harmonic)

The starting tone (240 Hz) plays throughout the piece as the other notes unfold above and below it. I used sine waves processed with a touch of tanh distortion to add a slight amount of harmonic content.

To me, this evokes what I imagine the loneliness of the vast distances of deep space must be like.
