"Heart Like Feathers (Acoustic Demo)" is the B-side of the single "Heart Like Feathers," the title track from the upcoming Robert Deeble album to be released February 7th, 2012.

Seattle’s Robert Deeble has been making sprit-infused music informed by the minimalist style of old folk heroes since the release of his debut album in 1994. With a notable list of respected musical affiliations that is as long as his discography, Deeble is returning from a self-imposed hiatus with a new album Heart Like Feathers set for release on the artist’s own Mind Bomb Publishing label in conjunction with Dead Letter Records. The album is Deeble’s first full-length release in over six years.

Deeble’s latest was made through funding raised in a way that was unimaginable when he first started releasing records. By selling a performance and a dinner via an internet-based campaign, Deeble managed to bring a rustic component to the table – literally. In return for their donation, backers would get a house show by Deeble and his band which included a private chef to prepare a meal for the guests.

It’s the kind of creative, thoughtful gesture that one might expect from an artist that takes time off to earn a master’s degree in psychology (causing some fans to playfully label his music as “grad school rock.”) Having laboriously toured throughout the US performing alongside such artists as Sam Phillips, Low, and Pedro The Lion, Deeble says “I felt my personal life starting to slip. I wanted to re-build who I am at home and not on the road.”

It was a reconstruction for Deeble that has resulted in not only the new record but also a family – Deeble and his wife recently became foster parents to a baby girl that they have raised since she was three days old.  These sentiments of personal struggle and life change can be heard throughout the album including the title track and first official single “Heart Like Feathers,” where Deeble sings, “Salvation comes like a wrecking ball; in a plume of dust and a heart like feathers.”

Produced by Dylan Magierek, founder of Badman Recording Co. (My Morning Jacket, Mark Kozelek, The Innocence Mission), and recorded on two-inch tape at Portland, Oregon’s Type Foundry Studios throughout the first half of 2011, the album features many of the friends (and fine musicians) that Deeble has met and worked with throughout the years.

Adding to Deeble’s Vocals and Guitar on the album is Victoria Williams (folk heroine and one of Paste Magazine’s “Top 100 Living Songwriters”) with Vocals on the track “Sunflower,” Stephen Hodges (drummer with Tom Waits and Mavis Staples) on Percussion, Ric Hordinski (co-founder of noted Americana band Over The Rhine) with Guitar on “Eucharist” and “The Colors of Dying” and Anna Lynne Williams of ethereal dream-pop band Trespassers William with Vocals on “Undertow.”

This crowd joins Deeble’s regular band mates Jeremy Summer on Bass, Drummer Jeremy Dybash (formerly with Velour 100, Damien Jurado and Rosie Thomas), Neal Vickers on Cello and Lili De La Mora on additional Backing Vocals. Amanda Lawrence appears on Viola and Tim Westcott supplies “ambience.” In addition to the production work of Magierek, Heart Like Feathers was co-produced and engineered by Adam Selzer, bassist with M. Ward and founder of the band Norfolk & Western.

Heart Like Feathers will be released on February 7th, 2012 featuring a jacket illustration by famed illustrator and printmaker Barry Moser.  A special edition of Heart Like Feathers will follow, featuring a different running order and packaged with a bonus acoustic EP and film housed in a bound book with lyrics. Though only Deeble can answer for sure, it’s safe to assume that it won’t be another six years until its follow-up. “God only knows,” says Deeble. “Maybe it’s safer to say it’s been worth the wait!”
