Technically, this is vaporwave, but instead of just being a straight slice of 90s optimism, it’s a message back to the past, lamenting the havoc that the great sources of 90s optimism would eventually wreak on our present. 

The highway extends before us, inviting and desolate. Let’s ride?

The culture and the aesthetic that vaporwave calls us back to was terminal after 9/11. Tech advanced in unforeseen directions and became so internet-based that even CDs began to seem obsolete, and rock had its last moment in the mainstream eye. Smartphones and hipster culture began to take root, and advertising design followed in their sleek, postmodern footsteps. “The Switch” finally pulled the plug, but on more than just NTSC. We were in the digital age, for better or worse, and there was no looking back. And as it turns out, sometimes progress is just reshuffling the deck and trading in old problems for new ones.

The Cold War honeymoon is over, terrorists having successfully exposed the fault lines of a terrified America. We united long enough to recover and clean up, but damage beyond what anyone could possibly have foreseen had already been done. We had our brief moment of relative partisan unity only to see it collapse beneath the weight of fear and distrust. 

Twenty years later, what have we learned?

As your teen years changed your body, 9/11 and the Internet changed America. Technology progressed, and humanity began progressing into it. Our newfound fear and insecurity dovetailed terrifyingly with military and corporate ambition. We found no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but, little did we know, our lord and savior Steve Jobs was developing the WMD to end them all, right here on our shores, and, for better or worse, the world would never be the same.

A vaporwave soundtrack to America’s post-Cold War, post-Y2K strut into its seeming happily-ever-after, right into the waiting jaws of another prolonged period of war, death, and hostility.

America was riding high in 1999. Our biggest worries were Y2K and being bored at work. The biggest knock on our president was that he was a horn dog for interns. Our enemies were licking their wounds. Somewhere in the Middle East, our demise was being plotted. But us? At least me personally? I was 9 years old and dreaming of winning a lottery I couldn’t even buy a ticket for and that my parents wouldn’t play. I was a broke kid just rocking out and lotto dreamin’.
