I wrote these variations on the theme of the well-known Korean folk song Arirang, using the greatest possible number of polyphonic techniques, including opposing directions, mirror reflection, canon, and even the very unusual form of a Möbius strip. Despite all this complexity, I tried to the keep individual variations harmonious and pleasing to the listener’s ears.

ADAGIO NUOVO is a paraphrase of a motif from Albinoni, seemingly discovered (though this remains questionable) in the mid-twentieth century by the Italian musicologist and composer Remo Giazotto. In my version, I used two time signatures. The first part of the piece is in 4/4, which gives it a more measured, even slow character. In the second part, the time signature of 3/4 (which is the original time signature) gives more dynamics and movement to the piece. In my version, you can find influences from numerous existing adaptations of this masterpiece by Albinoni.

"Tityre, tu patulae recubans sub tegmine fagi" (Tityrus, thou reclining beneath the shelter of the spreading beech tree) is the opening line of the 1st Eclogue of Vergil and is the title of the 26th monody contained in the second part (Opus 199) of a collection of pieces for solo flute written by Charles Koechlin (1867-1959) under the title "Les Chants de Nectaire" (Opus 198-200, 1944).

I have recorded it live at my studio using a Loeki tenor (a 415) by Friedrich von Huene + bell hole key by Daniel Bernaza.
