Not things you’d immediately associate with Reading’s prime guitar pop exponents Pete & The Pirates, but then neither are phasing synths, sizzling psychedelia and the general atmosphere of darkness and thunder. Yet, these are the potent thrills P&TP are mixing into their infectious pop stew on their second album, thickening the plot and beefing out their indiepop’s marrow to a staggering bulk. As bold steps forward from their pristine pop 2008 debut ‘Little Death’ go, it’s as fearless as any Wikileak.

Moshi Moshi Records started off as a hobby in 1998. Set up by three friends who had jobs working for major record labels. It was intended as a way of working with the bands that they loved but which didn’t fit in with the agenda of the day-job taskmasters. Early single releases from Zan Lyons, Kathryn Williams & Pedro and J Xaverre earned the label some plaudits. And sold a few records. Over the next five years Moshi Moshi slowly started to build a reputation for interesting, slightly leftfield, low-key releases. Then in 2004 things changed. For a start Moshi stopped being a hobby and became a fulltime job. Very soon after, Hot Chip and Bloc Party arrived and Moshi Moshi quickly became a name known to more than a few. Chart success followed with Yeti and The Rakes and higher-profile album releases from Architecture In Helsinki and Au Revoir Simone helped lift the label onto a new level. Then from 2006 onwards came artists such as Hot Club De Paris, Tilly And The Wall, The Wave Pictures, Slow Club, James Yuill, The Drums, Summer Camp, the list goes on.

In late 2006 the two remaining Moshi Moshi founders decided they wanted to get back to their one-off 7” release roots and the Moshi Moshi Singles Club was born. The intention was to try and release one 7” each month by a new up-and-coming artist. It would be limited to 1000 and only be available in a select group of indie stores. The artwork would be restricted to one colour and be designed by the bands themselves. Now some 40+ releases later the singles club’s roster makes an impressive list – (including) Kate Nash, Late of The Pier, Friendly Fires, Lykke Li, Florence and The Machine, Kindness, Dananananayckroyd. Disclosure. In 2011 Moshi Moshi expanded its remit by partnering up with some very talented young A&R folk to set up the imprints Tender Age, Not Even, Apricot and Dream Beach. Working under the Moshi Moshi umbrella these new labels have already yielded a clutch of exciting releases by artists from as far afield as Kenya and Seattle.

At the same time as running the record label Moshi Moshi Management has been quietly guiding the career of Metronomy and Slow Club as well as producers Ash Workman and Ollie Bayston. From 2012 this side of the business started to expand dramatically and now features a sizeable roster of emerging artists.

Looking back on the Moshi Moshi roster (particularly since the label ‘went fulltime’ in 2004) it’s a collection that bears comparison with any of its peers. For a label run by two people with no financial backing, it’s nothing short of an inspiration.

VASEY: A four piece musical entity with a massive, yet dynamic, modern rock sound.

A chance meeting through MySpace bought the British band to fruition in 2010 and November 2013 will see the release of their debut album “Be Someone Else” - a life affirming, guitar driven record that is almost cinematic in tone.  Created by singer/songwriter Karl Vasey, drummer Aidan Hunnisett, guitarist Ben Perdue and bassist David Amar, “Be Someone Else” wrangles angst and emotion from each of its 11 tracks. 

The song “Write a New End” found its way onto the soundtrack of the indie movie: “The Devil’s Tower” starring Jason Mewes (Jay of “Jay and Silent Bob” fame) while the video for the single “The Otherside” enabled VASEY to lay the foundations for a small, but loyal following. 
Accompanying the album’s release, videos for the songs “Fade Out” and “Fiction” showcase the diversity of a band aiming to capitalise on their evident public interest (immortalised in an American fan’s tattoo of the band’s moniker). 

Summer 2013 saw VASEY play a number of gigs and low key acoustic shows concluding with a festival appearance, playing to over 2,000 music lovers in attendance.  Brimming with confidence, VASEY eagerly look towards the impending release of “Be Someone Else” and what the future holds in store…


Once upon a not so interesting generation of crebbins lived four gorgeously polite young krooners. These krooners i speak ever so complimentary of decided to gather together a medley of sounds played on musical instruments. These sounds are known to the current generation as 'music'. (however others may beg to differ if they please). Oh golly gosh look at me waffling, well...to be frank, the music made by these gentlemen became really something quite revolutionary, and the idea really caught on. Rumour has it even a couple of other so called 'musicians' emerged from the woodwork with zany names such as 'The Beatles' and 'Ludwig Van Beethoven', but i wouldn't know much about that! So, about their way these gentemen went until one muggy day along came a dark dark cloud which spat a luminous mauve bolt of what appeared to be a disgusting cocktail of pain and paint at the ground. From this Worhol-esque puddle jumped a rather peculiar looking character known to his mum as 'the rebel'. He mentioned to the kind gentlemen he also had a cracking interest in this music maloney, so they invited him along. Thus spawned a disgustingly orgasmic combination of charm and pure raw sexual fustration that proved itself to be somewhat explosive. Should you come across these ever so cultured chaps, make sure to greet them with a hearty handshake, and for mwemwe's sake enjoy them. You'll most probably never smile this much again..
