CHAPTER 5 - SUMMER
“Cooling Centers” is a visceral portrait of climate-driven catastrophe, where extreme heat turns the city into a lethal furnace and survival depends on scarce, guarded refuges of cold air.  The song’s searing imagery—streets “bleeding sunlight,” glass melting, sirens strangled by static—conveys both the physical brutality of a heatwave and the social breakdown it triggers: rationed water, collapsed power grids, and locked doors at the very shelters meant to save lives.  Beneath the urgent plea to “keep your gates wide” runs a raw desperation to protect a child, making the chorus a cry of both parental love and political indictment.  It is a stark warning that in a warming world, compassion and access to life-saving resources may become the final measure of humanity.
