Please Leave a Light on When You Go (Hansen, arr. McCaffrey)

"Lula's Prayer" was commissioned by the Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians and is dedicated to Andrew Zohn. The composition was difficult in that it had many false starts, one of which used some quotations of David Diamond's music. David was a friend of Lula Carson Smith (Carson McCullers' maiden name) and had set her poem The Twisted Trinity for Voice and Piano. My intention was to use that melody as a point of departure, and use variation techniques to build the piece.

Long story short – many sketches, and an imminent deadline... As I learned more and more about her very troubled life, I began to think “What if in the midst of it all - between the strokes, flirtations with suicide, and illnesses - Lula would stop and reflect – perhaps even pray...

What ensued was a short, heartfelt piece of music for guitar ensemble which attempts to sing - what should be long vocal lines - through the guitar. Always a great performance challenge for guitars to perform as if they were a choir.

Things That Gain From Disorder, live

I wrote this piece initially for me to play on a tour with classical guitarist, Scott Morris and Jeff Young (formerly of Megadeth). After we performed for a year, Scott and I started performing with the great virtuoso/producer Julian Coryell (Leonard Cohen, Alanis Morissette). This recording was done with Scott and Julian at Julian's studio in Venice, CA
The initial idea of the tune was hocketed rhythmic figures which developed into melodic material with a syncopated groove.  Julian added looped guitar figures at the beginning to provide the "percussion".

And...yes...in retrospect...the title is not great..

String Theory for 3 guitars by Steve Thachuk

For electric guitar, violin, cello, and piano

The title for this piece is borrowed from 19th century biologist Ernst Haeckel's theory that all life originated from a single protoplasm somewhere in the gunk at the bottom of the ocean. When Haeckel and his contemporaries introduced this idea to the nonscientific community, it caused more than a little discomfort. Apparently, the idea that homo sapiens evolved from gooey oceanic slime is somehow less appealing than having been formed out of dirt by a deity who vaguely resembles Jeff Bridges, and who’s attitudes toward his creation alternate between complete indifference and utter psychosis. 

It’s been a century since Haeckel postulated in favor of the slime. And yet school boards throughout the United States continually attempt to insert Jeff Bridges into science curricula (as if Jeff needs extra screen time). Plenty of musical works have been devoted to the mysteries of Jeff Bridges’ six-day creation spree. It’s a nice enough idea, and it’s produced some remarkable works of human imagination. But personally, I’m a fan of the slime.
