Hitting the scene like a mix of Chris Brown, Usher, Drake, and Justin Bieber, St. Louis singer Darrein Safron debuted on the most surprising of labels, Tech N9ne's Strange Music. The son of Pavlov's Dog member and Marvin Gaye drummer Mike Safron, the singer came to the hardcore rap label via MC Stevie Stone with an appearance on the MC's 2013 LP 2 Birds, 1 Stone. He next landed on Stone's 2015 album Malta Bend, and that same year earned numerous credits on Tech's collabos collection Strangeulation, Vol. 2. In 2016 he made his solo debut on Strange Music with The Brilliant EP, which featured the single "Bad Gurl." ~ David Jeffries

Prozak is a longtime member of the Detroit-area horrorcore rap scene, performing in the groups Bedlam and Project: Deadman before embarking on a solo recording career in 2004. Moreover, his notability includes the founding of Wickedstock, an annual horrorcore festival held in the Detroit area. Born Steven Shippy, he began recording his raps in 1995 and founded his first group -- Strict9ne, also featuring his childhood friend Heckles -- in 1997. During the late '90s he became closely affiliated with the Detroit-area horrorcore scene, doing security work for the R.O.C. and his second-generation House of Krazees collective. He befriended fellow horrorcore rapper Madness (aka Curt D), and in 1999 the two founded Bedlam in the mid-Michigan city of Saginaw (approximately two hours north of Detroit). The duo issued several self-released Bedlam albums, including multiple volumes of the Chemical Imbalancez series, before signing with Long Range Distribution, which released Bedlamitez Rize in 2003 and Shock Treatment (previously released in 2002) in 2004. Prozak went solo in 2004, releasing the debut album Aftabirth via Long Range Distribution, and also that year he teamed up with former Insane Clown Posse producer Mike E. Clark to found the duo Project: Deadman and release the album Self Inflicted via MSC Music Entertainment. Several years passed before Prozak returned with his second solo album, Tales from the Sick (2008), his first of several releases for the Strange Music label. Paranormal (2012) and We All Fall Down (2013) fared better commercially and entered Billboard's rap chart around number ten. Born in London, England but raised in Miami, Florida, rapper Ben Miller aka Wrekonize is a member of the Mayday! crew who maintains a solo career as well. Coming up through Florida's battle rap circuit, he dropped his debut mixtape, The Chaotic Knowledge Sessions, in 2001. Two years later he entered contract negotiations with Roc-A-Fella Records, but as the deal slowly crumbled, Wrekonize moved on to the South Beat label and dropped the mixtape The Waiting Room in 2006. The Elevator Music mixtape followed in 2007, while 2009 saw Wrekonize joining fellow South Beat artists Mayday! on their mixtape Lords of the Fly. After an appearance on Tech N9ne's album Welcome to Strangeland, Mayday! signed with Tech's Strange Music label and released their official debut, Take Me to Your Leader, in 2012. The label released Wrekonize's solo effort, The War Within, in 2013. The album featured productions from DJ Sharpsound and Michael "Seven" Summers, plus guest artists Beanz, Posdnous, and Tech N9ne. Mayday! released Believers in 2013, following by a Murs collaboration in 2014 titled ¡Mursday! A third Mayday! collection, Future/Vintage, was issued in 2015. Wrekonize returned to his own solo material in 2016 with the track "Last Day Alive." The singles "Clones" and "Unknown Number" followed in 2017. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi

Affiliated with Tech N9ne's Strange Music label, the hip-hop group Mayday!'s 2006 national hit, "Groundhog Day," did not start out having any rotation on radio or MTV, but rather on YouTube. The DJ Craze-produced ode to the office nine-to-fiver, with Cee-Lo Green on the hook in Gnarls Barkley mode, received over two million views within just 48 hours, breaking the site's record. The story broke out to many of the mainstream media outlets (including ABC's World News Tonight and The New York Times), stirring up interest from some major record labels. 

This massive attention and acclaim sprouted from humble origins. MC Bernbiz, born Bernardo Garcia, and producer/keyboardist Plex Luthor, born Aaron Eckhart, were just two Miami suburbanites (Kendall, Florida, to be exact) who thought it would be fun to collaborate. Plex actually had previous recording experience as part of a few endeavors in Miami's rap underground, particularly Algorithm, before they came together in the early 2000s; plus, he also has contributed work to the Discovery Channel and the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming. Mayday!'s debut was the 2004 song "Quicksand," a local underground hit that brought their eclectic hip-hop over to the at-the-time newly formed SouthBeat Records. Under the label, they were better able to communicate the gamut of their musical influences like rock, jazz, and Miami dance -- a reflection of Miami's rich, cosmopolitan culture -- through their eponymous debut album released in September 2006. 

That same month they were designated as mtvU "Freshmen Five" artists, which nominated them as a college favorite well poised to hit it big in the majors. The group's career was put on hold as SouthBeat ran into financial problems and began a long, slow descent into bankruptcy, but consulting with other artists on the dying label introduced them to Ben Miller, aka rapper Wrekonize. Wrekonize joined the group in 2010, the same year they self-released the album Stuck on an Island, the title referring to the group's label problems. In 2011, rapper Tech N9ne invited the group for a guest shot on his Welcome to Strangeland album, an apt title since the group signed with Tech's Strange Music that same year. They debuted on the label in 2012 with the album Take Me to Your Leader. Believers followed in 2013, while their 2014 effort was a collaboration with rapper Murs and arrived with the mashed-up title ¡Mursday! The LP Future Vintage followed in 2015 and featured guest shots from Tech N9ne along with Afro-beat star Femi Kuti. Their seventh set, Search Party, was issued in 2017.
