Perhaps its the colder weather, the lack of sun, or the unknown of tomorrow, but these past few months have left me in a bit of a creative rut. My album is so close to completion that finding ways to push forward into new territories musically has been challenging in a way I haven't experienced before. The weight of finishing "the album" has been weighing heavily on me, but I can say that I'm finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. As it usually does, the hope was sparked by a trip to the desert a couple of weeks ago. The nights are bitterly cold there this time of year, but every day, the sun returns to thaw the world back to life. Walking around Joshua Tree that day, soundtracked by these songs, the sun beating back the cold, it became so clear that there is hope and that music really can cure all. I'm happy to share that soundtrack with all of you today in this mix. Hopefully it can give you some hope too. 

A huge thank you to all of the artists' music that I used. Everyone should check the tracklist below and be sure to take a minute to listen to their music.

Vertere - Mind Against & Somne

Constantly turning around itself, the winding melody of Vertere turns outward and inward at the same time, bringing the listener on a journey outward while mirroring a simultaneous labyrinthine journey inward. Like the word itself, Vertere, with its roots in the Latin word Verto (which itself takes its roots in the earlier Sanskrit word, Vartayati) it signifies the very nature of change itself. It means both to turn and reflect inward and yet also move forward — a call to action for setting in motion new things. A paradox at first glance but also perhaps a surprisingly accurate description of the destructive and reconstructive nature of creation. An apt metaphor for this bright new collaboration between established Life and Death artists Mind Against and the new artist project of Federico Maccherone, aka Somne.

On remix duties, when you have an artist of the caliber of Tobias Freund, you don’t need to ask for anything more and with his outstanding remix of Vertere he very clearly shows why. This long time mainstay of the electronic music scene has managed to stay not just relevant but on the cutting edge longer than most with respected releases on some of the most seminal imprints to be putting out music in the world of underground dance music. With Vertere he takes what’s already top quality material and somehow manages to turn it inward and in his own unique way elevate it to another level entirely. With a relentless beat and a sonic force that is hard to describe with mere words the Tobias. remix of Vertere comes out of the gate like a runaway machine rapturously drunk on its own self awareness. It marches ever forward, full of fervor, and will surely be driving dance floors both large and small to the euphoric edge of the ecstatic state.

Others are made for listening and dreaming like “Thinking Of You“ and “June Gloom“. You can feel the spirit of summer in every number, the desire for adventures in the nature, the energy of the sun. Jonas Saalbach presents his summary of a year full of travels and studio nights. His cooperations with Paul Klatt for example, are an important part of his work. Berlin is a big playground for him with a lot of inspiration every day and so the album is like a story board of life, a perfect starter for a new season, energetic and unstoppably creative.

November 2013. Nestled in my warm studio during a cold Berlin winter night, I get a call from Gaika  asking if we could write some music together. Sometimes writing music is pure joy.  A spark of creativity leads to discovery and perpetual excitement.  But really when it's written with this sort intent on a cold winters night - it's therapy.  
This was one of those sessions. We talk and trade stories of our bruised & battered hearts & laying down line after line.  
Credit to my poet Gaika for some of the most stunning verses that have come into a creative writing moment.

This song really struck a chord with us when it was released last year - upon first listen it has a real classic rock feel to it but below the surface is a psychadelic introspective quality that permeates the whole album. The song has a feeling of relentless motion and is laden with intricate hooks and details, but when you dissect it it's actually beautifully simple, which made adapting it a deeply rewarding process for us.
