Still Music is proud to present “Analog Aquarium”, the debut album by legendary Detroit house producer Rick “The Godson” Wilhite.

Rick is a longtime member of Detroit’s dance music scene, dating back to his time working at Buy Rite records, one of the epicenters of Detroit’s 1980’s techno music explosion. More recently, his own record shop Vibes New and Rare Music has achieved revered status amongst those in the know, acting as the heart and soul of deep dance music in the city. Rick is also responsible for throwing countless parties in Detroit, helping to develop the house sound that the city is known for, and to build connections to DJs from other cities like Chicago that have proved invaluable over the years. His love for music and records has led to a DJing career that has spanned many genres, though it is his take on deep house music that has led him to international acclaim. Drawing from Detroit’s history of soul, jazz, disco, house, and techno, Rick’s productions weave these sometimes disparate elements into a beautiful, cohesive whole that remains distinctly his own, just as he does with the records he plays in his DJ sets. Working with Theo Parrish, Keny Dixon Jr., and Malik Pittman on the 3 Chairs project has grown Rick’s reputation even greater. With many classic 12” releases under his own name that have been absolutely beaten to death by DJs worldwide, it is now time for Rick to leave his mark on a wider audience with his debut solo album.

While it is undoubtedly HIS album, “Analog Aquarium” allows Rick to explore all sides of his musical abilities with the assistance of some of his most trusted allies. The record kicks off with a hot, jazzy vocal track in collaboration with Osunlade, Theo Parrish, and Billy Love, the Jacksons’ referencing “Blame It On The Boogie”. While this tune conjures up images of the California sun, the next cut, “Dark Walking”, sees Rick team up with fellow 3 Chair Malik Pittman to explore the deep, nasty underbelly of the 313 with menacing synth bass and warm jazz chords. The two part jam “Muzic Gonna Save The World” is a loose, stomping string-heavy romp, bringing to mind Pharoah Sanders if the synthesizer and sampler had been his instruments of choice. “Sunshine Pt. 2” starts off pleasant enough with rolling percussion and Rick’s own voice intoning, “Sunshine”, but those vibes are soon belied by the ominous strings and bells that transform the track entirely. One of the tracks from Rick’s first outing on Still Music is revisited on “City Bar Opening (Basement Mix)”, taking the already raw feeling to an even higher level. “Deep Horizons” begins with frenetic percussion that is eventually whittled down to a soulful groove before building the intensity back up. Rick’s famous late-night sampled grooves reappear on “In The Rain”, with Billy Love vibing up the place with his heart-felt vocals. On “Cosmic Jungle” and “Cosmic Soup”, Rick explores outer and inner space with tripped-out sci-fi effects but without sacrificing the soul that makes his productions so personal. All in all, a fitting full-length for such a diverse musician. 
Still Music is based in Chicago, IL, and is the brainchild of Jerome Derradji. Now in its seventh year, Still Music has been instrumental in the worldwide proliferation of some of America’s freshest underground dance music. From raw disco to beautiful, refined techno, and stopping at every tempo and mood between and beyond, Still Music and its sublabels Past Due and Love For Music (also known as Stilove4music) have found room to include artists both established and new, releasing what can only be described as GOOD music.

01 Blame It On The Boogie

We have been proud to watch the rise of Oleg Poliakov after he first joined our ranks with Datcha Musik way back in 2007. Since first swearing allegiance to the Circus, he has continued to unfurl a refined approach to house and techno that carefully balances a respectful mastery of the classic tropes of the genre with his own instinct for seductive melodic content. Finally, after no less than eleven singles for labels such as Bass Culture and Eklo as well as us, the time has come for Oleg to embrace the album format and take us on a journey that stretches beyond the immediacy of a dancefloor 12” and captures perfectly where he is at right now.

As the preceding single C.A.V.O.K has revealed, there is a techno spirit roaming the circuitry of Oleg’s studio, tussling with the delay and reverb gates, firing off focused, intricate rhythms and unafraid of whipping up a mean-tempered kick or two. Across Random Is A Pattern you can hear such energy surging out of tracks like “Beyond” and “Anatomy Of A Shipwreck”, with the latter having an especially tough rhythm section. However, these cuts have just as much brain as they do brawn, and in between the driving drums sit haunting pads, ethereal dub textures and curious string harmonies.

This is not an album of functional club tracks though, far from it. Recognising the value of the long player as a vessel for exploration, Oleg turns his hand to some truly unexpected patterns and tones. “A Quiet Storm” comes from the school of classic ambient electronica and leftfield broken beat, while “Holy You” makes for one of the most startling moments on the album with a powerfully resonant vocal sample over plaintive piano and a fractured rhythm. 

While some may be surprised to hear the styles that Oleg has turned his hand to, the ten tracks are undeniably his. In his choice of mysterious chords and moving key structures, he continues along the smooth creative arc he has been carrying us on since he first emerged. The drums might bite harder in places, or softer in others, but Random Is A Pattern makes perfect sense as the logical next step in the unfolding story of Oleg Poliakov.

This mix was made using only my dad's records.  Every one of them an original pressing, stuff he bought when he was about as old as I am now--give or take a decade.  My dad never played an instrument really, and my mom always joked that he was actually tone-deaf.  But man, what a taste in music--and in his own way, what an ear too.  My dad could tell you who was playing drums and what year the record was made after hearing the first 2 bars of a song.  Maybe his mind never quite figured out how to communicate with his hands or his voice in a musical way--but he certainly had a mind for music.  

Some of these records were his favorites, some of them are my favorites, and some of them I listened to for the first time while I was putting this mix together--discovering new favorites.

Bit Funk - The Long Road Ahead

Recorded on the anniversary of JFK's assassination and 21 years after their historic '92 New Year mix on Kiss 100 FM, Coldcut meets The Orb inna Uptown Youth House for the Return Trip. Matt Black and Jonathan More alongside studio accomplice Dor Wand got suitably enhanced with Dr LX Paterson and Youth for a multi-player late night jam session lasting over 3 hours. They then entrusted the multitracks of the set to DJ Food who heroically edited, condensed and massaged the sprawling swamp of sound into a tight - but also loose - 2 hour Solid Steel session.

Swimming through the mix are Lee Perry, Killing Joke, Sun Ra, William Burroughs, Teebs, Ry Cooder, Actress, Prince Jammy, Iggy Pop, Monty Python, Hank Williams and Hal 9000. Alongside unreleased dubs from the players themselves, remixes and versions of tunes old and new, the complete track listing for this marathon set may never be fullly disclosed. It's 2 hours, 10 minutes of sonic secrets to melt your mind, probably best listened to in headphones late at night with all suitable facilities for the full effect. Enjoy this trip.

The Sonic Aesthetic: New Districts

Still Music is based in Chicago, IL, and is the brainchild of Jerome Derradji. Now in its seventh year, Still Music has been instrumental in the worldwide proliferation of some of America’s freshest underground dance music. From raw disco to beautiful, refined techno, and stopping at every tempo and mood between and beyond, Still Music and its sublabels Past Due and Love For Music have found room to include artists both established and new, releasing what can only be described as GOOD music. 

This is the natural way of working for Mr. Derradji, who moved to the US in 2000 and cut his teeth working with various record shops and electronic music distributors in Chicago. He decided to launch Still Music in 2004, with the inaugural release featuring Amp Fiddler from Detroit remixing Patchworks from France. With this template set, Still Music went on to release music from veteran dance producers such as Rick Wilhite and Gerald Mitchell, while also stretching out into other genres on Randolph’s “Lonely Eden” album and Seun Kuti’s political afrobeat on “Think Africa”. Still also dropped the In The Dark compilation, showcasing the then-emerging Detroit house sound and featuring the production debut of Keith Worthy, which was touted as Groove Magazine’s #1 release the month it came out. These credentials have earned Still Music “Label of the Month” status in XLR8R magazine and on leading dance music site Resident Advisor. 

Not satisfied with Still Music’s impressive breadth and depth, Jerome also launched two highly successful sublabels to compliment the main label. Past Due records is the place for long-forgotten independent disco and funk gems to be unearthed, reissued, and remixed by modern producers, bringing artists like DIT and Greyship Daviz into the spotlight they (wrongfully!) never achieved the first time around. Love For Music (also known as Stilove4music) is the label dedicated to more underground sounds, from disco edits to lo-fi house and techno madness.
