Prismode & Solvane’s Octopus begins with an exposed kick suspended by intricate melodic strings and spare percussion. Driving but deep, it bears a sense of mystery that is both captivating and fresh, leading on to Kiko and Thomas Gandey’s TX1, which dives even further into an otherworldly realm. With Umami, Heerhorst continues to explore the darker and more introspective side of tech, while Boy Next Door takes us down the rabbit hole with the stamina-brimming dungeon techno track Heron. Bjorn Stoerig shifts up the mood with Mettetin, a steady groove-tech journey with subtle tribal flavours. Irish forerunner Ejeca rounds up the lot with Zatoria, an arpeggio-heavy masterpiece boasting a sultry bassline and floating chords.

Release Info: 
Its been more than 2 years since I did an original release on my own label. Its been 9 months since I had an original NOIR release. I wanted some time without releases. Some time to breathe, to think and most importantly time to be creative and to experiment. I have picked 2 productions I felt sounded different to everything else out here.

Eruption was already made in the fall 2017 and I have been road-testing it since ADE17 and changed it quite a lot over the 6 months period from when I thought it was finished to what it actually sounds like now. I wanted the track to be brutal like a volcano erupting but at the same time have beautiful and peaceful elements. Hence the breakdown lava sliding into the middle of the track before it all erupts again. I have spent many hours trying to make it sound raw and unpolished.

Disruption is build around a super simple sequence loop I played by hand while jamming with new pluck sounds. As the sequence got layered and washed in effects it became a quite haunting loop and that led me to add a boys choir to give that feel bigger impact.This track sounds simpler than Eruption but its actually stacked with layers. Disruption is meant to make you close your eyes, follow the rhythm, the simple sequenced loop and get hypnotized.

Title track Bagkat summons a tribal excursion into South African rhythms, dialing into a rhythmic mysticism by layering exotic percussions and nostalgic vocals. And impending sense of tension and release stirs up a constant excitement, a sonic trait that transcends onto the second cut. 

Yenboo strikes out as an inherently heady, intense slice, with a bubbling energy and sweeping drive. Indigenous elements are omnipresent, soothing yet stirring in an array of harmonic invocation.

With countless new music being released at a daily basis it's hard to find the gems that stick to you for a longer period of time nowadays. But Portuguese DJ, producer and label head Pedro Martins has managed to find exactly these tracks for his label Karakter Records. His formula of success sounds simple: the tracks have to have a strong character. But not only does Pedro dig for new music but has implemented his own trademark sound. His summer remake and second remix approach of Switchdance's track 'The Black Tape' that is also featured in his latest art:cast (www.soundcloud.com/torture-the-artist/artcast-32-by-pedro-martins) is a portrayal of Pedro's perception of a laid back summer track that still captures the mysticism of both, the original and his first remix that came along with the 'Black Tape Remix EP'. As soon as the listener is soaked into Pedro's synth- and atmosphere-defining synth-pad sounds the Amsterdammer flips the switch and lets the the soundscapes escalate before returning to the original summer vibe of the remix. 

Switchdance's EP 'The Black Tape Remixes' were released April 20th, 2018 on Karakter Records.

A new duo launches by the name of Ghost Vision. Joining forces with an introspective, uplifting debut slice on Kompakt, the pair are two well-known figures Thomas Gandey aka Cagedbaby, member of Matom alongside Matt Edwards, and Daniel McLewin, half of UK-based production duo Psychemagik. Fruit of these blissful moments when no imaginary wall obstructs the vision and the stream of consciousness gives up to the entrancing magic of the creative flow, 'Saturnus' is an upright mano a mano between two musicians and their gear, unchained from all preconceptions and biases; real (machine) talk as the hip-hop heads would say. 

Straight soul oration poured off the cosmic scapes generated by a good old Moog Voyager, '70s string machines', Oberheim OBXA, 303, Space Echo and the too little-known and equally little-used Korg Lambda, Ghost Vision's debut EP traverses remote kosmische-indebted expanses but hits close to the core with its deft mix of slow-burning spectral funk, textured outerspace pads and further stirring heart-searching harmonics. Subtly arranged yet leaving maximum room to the lively force of its original layout, it is a lovingly crafted piece of emotive and psychedelic magnitude that's seamlessly given birth to. Enter the greater deep and important world of Ghost Vision.

Ghost Vision - Zuul Passage

Sam Barker (@voltek) has had a long ongoing relationship with Berghain and Ostgut Ton, having released two LPs and various EPs as one half of Barker & Baumecker and hosting regular nights at the club since September 2008 as co-founder of the label Leisure System. 2017 marked the beginning of his solo residency, 2018 sees his first solo release with Ostgut Ton.

Both as a musician and label owner, Barker operates on the fringes of techno, balancing experimentation with functionality. On ‘Debiasing’, he takes a hard look at the musical elements often considered necessary to maintain dancefloor momentum, with four distinct tracks of morphing synth stabs and paired down metronomic rhythms in varying time signatures. While there is no kick, snare, or clap to be heard, the result is not experimental techno deconstructions but driving, hypnotic and unlikely dancefloor tools.
