EdOne kicks off proceedings with In the Shadow, a playful piece doused in a quasi-nostalgic mood, decked in dramatic, strain-inducing synths. A tension-filled track, with ample build ups and intense breaks that set the mood for the entire A side. Spiral stays true to its name, building up a story through convoluted layers while carving out big chunks of space through minimal elements. The main runners here are undulating synths, creating hooks and breaks, and aptly timed whistled chants that give the track a sense of mystery. Circle amps up the dark factor a notch, exhibiting eerie and cavernous sounds atop a deadpan lead.

Marc Holstege’s first track Bisou subtly commands attention from the first bars by the way of heavy-hitting, subdued percussion. The focal point, however, is a psalm-like chorus, that raises spirits up and guides the melody along with a perky bassline.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, we have Chasing Shadows, a dim track with an overcast mood. A snaking bassline pools underneath the main synth before making a way to a climactic peak point.

Abe return to their SINNERS imprint this March with another emotive two tracker entitled ‘Asgard’.

Launched in October of 2017, SINNERS has established itself with authority, gaining support from the likes of M.A.N.D.Y., Guy Mantzur, Marcus Worgull and Agoria to name just a few across its first two releases. Guided by Abe, an anonymous duo based out of Europe, the label has become the home of a series of dark yet dynamic self released EPs, and this third release sees the duo continue in a similar vein to deliver two further striking and vibrant productions.

‘Asgard’ opens proceedings to reveal a slow blooming, emotive production that’s guaranteed to draw in listeners. It is these qualities that Abe love to explore and distort, resulting in vivid, rich melodies, whilst sculpting a production effortlessly balanced in both suspense and emotion.

On the flip, ‘The Hunt’ establishes an equally familiar aesthetic as we see the duo return to the peak time, unleashing a series of driving basslines, howling synths and scintillating arpeggio’s over murky percussion shots and hypnotic yet subtle background nuances throughout.

Bridging instrumental tact with melodic mysticism, live act and DJ duo Hidden Empire present their debut album Mind Palace, the fruit of their labour of one whirlwind year. On Stil Vor Talent they find a welcome home, having already gained traction with several releases on the label as well as other renowned imprints such as Suara.

Fluid, atmospheric tracks set a consistently lush vibe overall, from the esoteric kickoff track Journey Into the Self to subtle warm-up tools like the oriental-instilled Hummus and Fafnir, or the couple’s first vocal collaboration Pure. Fellow Cologne singer Inga Nelke brings a touch of sensuality with her soft vocal chops atop a broken beat-infused melody accented with gripping piano chords.

But it’s in club tracks that the album abounds, found often in antithetical pairings, whether it’s the marriage of a Moog bassline and warm Caribbean rhythms in Detroit in Limbo or the juxtaposition of analogue and digital rhythms on In The Woods, created using sylvan recordings as percussion. It’s the title track Mind Palace, however, that reaches the apex of antipolar combinations, displaying a breakbeat-heavy lead doused in exotic vocals perched onto a steady bassline, underlining the artists’ knack for innovative rhythms.

A nod to the classic heydays of acid comes in the shape of Acid Flashback, centred around a massive synth hook courtesy of the iconic Roland 303, a tinge slightly present on the spiralling fierce cut Asmoday, albeit a fraction more subtle.

Energy is one of the key traits of the album, as Branko and Niklas conceive a copious amount of hard-hitting tracks that amplify and engage towards the second half of the record. Black Beauty oozes stamina from the get-go, its relentless groove guiding a subdued bassline and minimal elements towards the peak point. With Natural Takeover, a tech powerhouse with a tenacious lead and ominous vocals, the album reaches its darkest corner of the Mind Palace universe.

All in all, the artists showcase a plethora of straightforward tracks with heterogeneous sound aesthetics, where a closer listen can only reveal further and more elaborate depths.

Rafael Cerato enlists Turkish duo Lunar Plane for two slices of tribal infused grooves. While Darkclaw opens up subtly and marches along a winding intro and zig-zagging lead, Guru takes the exotic mantras one step further. Centred around a hypnotic sitar loop, the build-up makes for an intense, hands-in-the-air moment at peak time, with an energetic release. Known for his remixing chops, The Dome finds Canadian Simon Doty lending his producer skills alongside Cerato in a dark and winding journey into late-night techno antics. 

Previous Stil vor Talent signee Transcode pushes the envelope of his usual style with three spacious and dynamic tracks. Adonis elevates with its upbeat yet slightly nostalgic mood, while the meandering percussion holds the piece’s foundation. Ominous synths and spacious leads mark Orbital as another exciting prospect aimed at stirring up the dancefloor. Skynet rounds up the release on a similarly haunting note, offering up darker textures in perfect contrast with the preceding tracks.
