Hot on the heels of his acclaimed debut EP released a few months ago on the label, Barcelona-based producer Gespona reemerges on Stil vor Talent with his eagerly-anticipated followup, "Magota". Comprising four tracks that move the cursor from stealth bass percolation to exotica-fuelled swagger, via injections of tendinous hip-hop-laced prog and heavily processed machine funk, this sophomore incursion from the Spanish talent does way better than simply keeping its promises: it opens on dimensions that were hinted at, but yet to unfold on Gespona's previous efforts. 

Lead-single "Magota" fractures its way in through a well-balanced blend of powerhouse subs and brittle piano chords. Remaining subtle in his approach, keen to explore further that grey area between neo-classical mellifluousness and proper club-focused firepower, Gespona treats us to a masterly orchestrated slice of poignant electronics, culminating through a prismatic climax of heart-broken synth swashes and finessed clavier expression. More of a functional DJ tool, "Umbra" heads straight for the jugular with its sweatbox-ready bass attacks, Egyptian-like melody and ominous buildup, tailored for nothing else but flinging the dance floor into a state of never-ending euphoria.  

Joining forces with Abuk on the breaksy, old-school house-inspired "Stat Out There", Gespona fires off yet another perfectly integrated mix of forward-moving dynamics and Chicagoan soulfulness. Riddled with melancholic keys and Abuk's haunting vocals, the track cuts a path truly its own, slacklining adroitly between classic piano house sensuality and a hi-intensity electro punch. Capping it all proper EBM-style, the aptly-titled "Jigsaw" featuring Althoff is what you'd call a hard-churning workout, progressively evolving from a rather straightforward momentum onto jagged 4x4 mechanisms to floor-devastating effect. Superior focus and execution from a producer who's undeniably on the cusp of even greater things.

Right on cue for extended action throughout the even busier part of the summer ahead of us, here comes Gespona's third Stil vor Talent transmission, 'Acridis Talk', after his previous two 2022-released studio efforts, 'Kune' and 'Magota'. Hailing from Barcelona, Gespona champions a sound both sensually deep and openly groove and percussion-focussed, which echoes well the type of sound he tries to bring on stage. Armed with his Elektron Digitone and Moog Sub 37, the Spanish producer pulls out a quartet of essentially tribal-minded tunes designed to fit any moment of the night, in terms of both rhythm and ambience, harnessed for proper explosive peak-time business and further spacious atmospheric sorties in equal measure.

Beating a martial pulse, 'Helicon' goes hard in the paint with its cleverly engineered mix of hi-intensity EBM tropes, sizzling tech outbursts and lavishly hued synth envelopes from outer space, gaining maximal momentum up until about halfway in, when the wildest break/drop combo ensures to have you taking a tumble into the greater void. A more subliminal, delay-heavy piece of 4x4 expression, the title-track 'Acridis Talk' trades the linear buildup of the opener for the kind of syncopate swagger one would be hard pressed to resist. Befogged under a thick haze of FX and processed machine talk, the track evolves into a fiery pseudo-acid/indus slasher, murky and oddly rousing as it gets. Perhaps the epitome of Gespona's signature moody ambivalence and thorough floor-destroying acuity.

Recorded in collaboration with fellow Barcelona-based Argentinian producer Djolee, 'Colorblind' showcases the housier, more atemporal facet of Gespona's work. Laying down a feverish assembly of soulful vocals out the classic mid-90s house repertoire and more exploratory keyboard work on a kosmische tip, the pair has us transfixed with their highly infectious blend of ancestral vibes and ultramodern groove. Together with Buenos Aires' rising talent Abuk, the Barcelona maestro shifts focus onto more intricate polyrhythms, treating the odd Latin / piano house classic to a vibrant facelift, as it nimbly swings the pendulum between elegant melodic brittleness and no-prisoner, bass-laden floor menace. A work of dual beauty and rugged power, hypnotic and entrancing from all angles.

For its last release of 2023, When We Dip XYZ is proud to present a three track remix pack of Motip White’s ‘Clean the Turbines’ EP. 

Kicking things off is Atish, chopping and pitching Motip White’s vocal from ‘What Do You Want Me to Say.’ The Manjumasi label-boss complements the track with a rolling bassline, glitches hitting left, right, and centre, and the gritty bass fills from the original. 
 
Also taking on ‘What Do You Want Me to Say,’ Gespona & Djolee craft huge percussion rolls and manipulate White’s layers and textures. The two artists, who have just launched their own label ‘Rummel,’ leave room for the memorable hook halfway through, which then recedes in favour of the heavy drums. 

Third up is Meera with her take on ‘Clean the Turbines.’ Faithful to her style, which has recently been showcased on VOD and Crosstown Rebels, she opposes a subby kick with a tempest of hats & shakers, harmonically guided by a light piano. The Norwegian producer keeps on building the energy, surprisingly introducing her own vocals and an acid layer on the arp as the tune unfolds.
