Over the years, Oliver Koletzki has continuously cited Berlin as a point of reference and, more importantly, a source of inspiration. Two of his albums Großstadtmärchen and Großstadtmärchen 2 have been a direct ode to the capital. Friedrichshain, one of Berlins vibrant districts, has always held a special place in Olivers heat. This is where he started out when he first moved to the city, and this is where he lives now. Schneeweiss, one of Friedrichhains best and most loved restaurants, is just around the corner. Over the course of eight years, the stylish eatery has impressed many a Berlin foodie with its contemporary take on alpine cuisine and attention to detail. 

Music is part of the experience here, which is no surprise due to one of the owners extensive background in Berlins club scene of the early days. After the warm and beautiful indie leaning EP from Dead Heat, Life and Death steps back up to the plate with two fresh dancefloor killers found in Mind Against's new Avalon EP. 

With sounds that seem plucked from an early 80s children's filmstrip gone very wrong (or perhaps very very right) Mind Against weave a dark, inspired charge into the black of night with both sides of this stunning EP.

On the A side is Several Times, a techno gem that comes out of the gate at breakneck pace with solid drums, bass and a rhythmic synth pulse that evolves slowly and strongly until finally augmented by a main analog synth line that reaches over from the other side and grabs you directly by the ears. It's an evocative melody that keeps the listener on edge with tones that are fully present yet almost barely hold together, teetering just on the edge of falling apart but never quite falling away from just where they need to be. A techno themed soundtrack to a disturbing Groundhog Day of the faraway future.

Over on the B side is the EP's namesake with a simmering sound that makes reference to the ancient island home of legendary sorceress Morgan Le Fey, sister of the famous King Arthur and whose mystic ways were to blame for mirages seen by sailors long out at sea. Here again an analog synth casts its spell on the listener, framed by delayed chords and a foreboding low end growl that slowly tell the tale of Avalon. Managing the difficult task of painting a picture without form, Mind Against weave an emotional drama without words and yet their vocabulary of sound seems keenly up to the task. No easy feat but one this duo have proven again and again that they are more than able to accomplish.

Sailor & I are back with their latest productions for Life and Death. The two original tracks, while very different in moods, both share lush productions and a dramatic musical storytelling not often found in a typical dance release. While Boys & Girls offers a slowed-down mournful and yet beautiful nostalgic tale of childhood days gone by, Turn Around comes straight out of the gate like a racehorse on fire, flanked by strong strings and a vocal that pleads a case for love that comes straight from the heart. 

And of course rounding out the release is arguably one of the most anticipated tracks of the summer. Ever since it first started falling on people’s ears earlier this year, the Âme remix of “Turn Around” has been the high point of sets by Tale of Us, Dixon, Mano Le Tough as well as the few select others that have had their hands on it up until this point. A long time friend of the label and an artist who needs no introduction, Recondite presents two unique techno narratives for his much anticipated first EP on Life and Death.

Up first and straight out the gate like the turning of the great Boethian wheel, Think Twice turns over and on top of itself again, like the march of time and the fortunes of paupers and princes alike. An ever advancing urgent reminder of the transitory nature of the eternal now, it graces us with her beauty and leaves us with a shaking sensation deep in our bones. 

On the B side, Serak begins with a bellowing bass emitted like a series of holotropic breaths from belly of Stanislav Grof himself. A sequence of sounds sent like a fishing line to the depths of the psyche, it returns with a portentous melody that winds and wanders until exploding midway thru the piece in a burst of restrained emotion.

3 QUESTIONS to DOUGLAS GREED:

Q: The insiders know that Douglas is not your real name. So what´s the secret behind your artist name - if there is a secret? 

A: I used the be a little bit of a DOUGLAS COUPLAND fan boy. So I thought it would be a nice idea to call myself Douglas. 3 years ago I met him in hamburg, it was actually my birthday. I told him that he inspired me a lot and that I call myself Douglas because of him - I think he was a bit scared of me that moment. 


Q: During the years lots of people were talking about "move to Berlin, it´s the center of electronic music". Why did you not leave your hometown to follow the mass?


A: The place I live in Jena is a nice and easy going small-town in east germany. It´s all green over there - so why should I move to berlin?


Q: You had past releases on huge labels such as Freude Am Tanzen or BPitch Control. What can we expect this year?

A: I got a new project called EATING SNOW with my buddy MOORYC. We will release our debut album in september on Freude Am Tanzen.

Sure, you'll find some techno elements here and there, but you're as likely to find a maraca or a cowbell as you are to find a moody synth arpeggio and his selections include Rampa, Nick Monaco, KiNK, Kerri Chandler, Kill Frenzy, and "The Manifest," one of his own tunes off of his upcoming album Precious, released May 22.

Rising from humble beginnings like Icarus heading towards the skies, Singularity plots its course for the stratosphere as it heads ever onwards and upwards…but unlike Icarus this is a tempered and restrained ascent not an easy task to pull off but one that makes the impact so much stronger for it's subtle, ever evolving simplicity.

With a melody that comes on like a half-remembered memory and lingers long after the sound itself fades away, Singularity stays with you, slowly and carefully weaving its way around you while its drums beat a steady, forceful pulse and its percussion jumps in and out like Billy Pilgrim skipping thru time. The combined effect is something much more than the sum of its parts. Somehow this simple techno tune creates an entire world of its own and asks you to inhabit it for a while, losing yourself in the process..

On the flip side, Monoloc exercises an equal and proportional restraint in his take on things. Like a voice emerging from a faded dream, the melody peeks out behind a curtain of reverb and industrial drums compellingly foreshadowing its full potential. Growing from there, the atmosphere slowly engulfs the listener until finally the slow build up reaches its full force providing a fantastic re-imagining of the original with an almost romantic yet no less powerful conclusion.

Unrelenting drum pounds, a percussive tribal backbone and rapid-fire vocal chops become locked in an aural bull-fight that's both infectious and dancefloor-ready.

On the back of brick-solid releases across L.I.E.S., and Willie Burns' label W.T. Records, Florian Kupfer has swiftly become a serious mainstay in the world of screwball techno and (ahem) outsider house. His tracks are always tough as nails, but there's an eerie magic that hangs in between their mechanic drive. His 2013 insta-classic "Feelin'" was such a devastating Trojan Horse for that reason – weaving melancholy into peak-time dancefloors with subtle flair.

Gladly, the Wiesbaden-based wunderkind is back. Kupfer resurfaces this time for Technicolour (Ninja Tune's singles label) with Explora — and it's his most menacing yet. The light gloom of his L.I.E.S. work has been subsumed by a grinding mechanical growl. Amongst the set, lead and title-track "Explora (Slave)" is its most thorough workout, opening with the snarl of a twisted humanoid. 'Explore your fantasy' it its broken mantra, crunching from the distorted Tanoy of a dystopian dancefloor. The track builds, cracks and swells across its lifespan, sputtering out at the 10m mark into quiet reflection. It's dark, crunching – and really quite beautiful – chaos.

Scorched Earth EP by Konrad Black, a selection of advanced 101 techno
infused break-beat science.
With his sparse, yet highly considered discography, Mr. Blacks rst output
for Meander draws key inspiration from recent earth-bound meteorites and the
blinding light that follows. Creating precision dance music, Black conjures
the essence of the explosive meteorite, its afterglow and its sonic
resonance. The results are powerful, timeless sonic treatments for body and

Konrad Black Sycho Te Alyn (Meander 16)

Mørbeck makes mighty meaty material. That much is clear, but what's also pretty cool is that he chooses to do it on his own terms. Beyond a loosie here and there, like the M_REC 12" from this year, he opts to release on own-brand labels, Code Is Law included.

The hourlong double EP T.R.I.P.S. is Mørbeck's most comprehensive statement to date – and, for our money, the best yet. "Virgin Suicide" is uncommonly brash, winching its way towards a killer bait 'n switch in the final third, but still retaining enough of the robust techno to mark it as definably his.

The Panama connection runs deep in ‘Fever’, a hefty Tech house number shrouded in mystery. The slick vocal cuts and heavy bassline are dripping in Robosonic’s signature techniques, combined with the distinct melodic flavour and pulsating chords by K.E.E.N.E. . Sascha Braemer builds on the mysterious vibe, taking things into a deep progressive Techno realm with his remix.
