For the past sixty years, composer and interdisciplinary artist Meredith Monk has been expanding the possibilities of the human voice. A pioneer of extended vocal technique and interdisciplinary performance, she has created collaborative performance pieces that stretch the limits of music, inspiring figures from Björk to Merce Cunningham. Her most recent work, "Indra’s Net," draws from her decades of Buddhist practice and explores themes of impermanence and interdependence against the backdrop of our ecological crisis.

In this episode of Life As It Is, Tricycle’s editor-in-chief, James Shaheen, and co-host Sharon Salzberg sit down with Monk to discuss the relationship between her art and her meditation practice, the importance of listening fearlessly, and why she believes art is a bodhisattva activity.

This is part 2 of the performance “Dialogue of Memories” that took place during the night of summer solstice 2021 in the Sirgenstein Cave in Southern Germany. Every part consists of 552 breaths and vocal sounds.

Dialogue of Memories - part 2

STRATA is the fifth performance art and film hybrid by artist duo VestAndPage (Verena Stenke and Andrea Pagnes). It is a film of philosophical, poetic action exploring caves as proto-spaces for altered states and sites of knowledge-making and human becoming. Some of the oldest known examples of human figurative artworks have been found within the caves of the Swabian Jura in Germany. These are the products of the Ice Age, dating back 33,000 to 43,000 years. VestAndPage convened an interdisciplinary gathering of over 20 artists and scientists to engage with these unique spaces and places and challenge central ontological and social issues. 

From December 12 to 15, 2024, as part of IX Venice International Performance Art Week “Portals and Constellations”, STRATA was reimagined as a video and sound installation in the European Cultural Centre (ECC) - Palazzo Mora. 

The soundscape for the exhibition by Douglas Quin is conceived as a complement to the film. Rather than recreate the film's soundtrack, the installation focused on conveying some of the experience of the caves themselves with audio gathered 'in situ' from performances to soundscapes. The approach to the audio for the gallery installation involved drawing from the many hours of location recordings, deconstructing and recomposing the layers and sonic strata to intimate the resonances of Deep Time and collective consciousness.

This piece was commissioned and performed by the incredible vocal group, The Rose Ensemble. This group is world renowned for a reason. I love writing for these guys because they will always knock it out of the park. This piece is featured on their CD, Road To Compostela. The Rose Ensemble is an incredible vocal group, one of the best in the world, find them. they have many albums available.
