Paul's classic statement on the heart of marriage in Ephesians 5 can speak more broadly to how we are called to love not just our spouses but everyone else as well. The key to understanding how true love works is to recognize that true love does not respond to someone who is lovable but makes the other lovable, true love does not demand but earns submission, and true love is self-love to the extent that it is self-giving love.

Better Than the Angels - Oct 6 - Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost

Every human belief or opinion is based upon a presupposition - a faith commitment that cannot be proven but can only be assumed. For instance, the difference between Christianity and atheism is not the difference between “faith” and “reason”, between opinion and fact, between superstition and rationality; instead, both positions are based on unprovable, faith-based assumptions - presuppositions. Christians believe God exists, atheists believe God does not exist. Neither can prove their position is correct, so both hold their position based on faith. And starting from those presuppositional foundations, each builds out logical explanations of how the universe works based on those presuppositions.

The question is which presupposition makes for the best logical conclusions; does faith in God or does faith in no-God make best sense of the universe? Does Christianity or atheism make best sense of the inborn sense of justice all humans have? Does Christianity or atheism make best sense of the quest for beauty that all humans strive for?

For Christianity, the logical conclusions of belief that God has revealed himself in Jesus make sense of our world in ways that no other presupposition can.

Is Christianity Reasonable? (Ep102)

The discussion between Jesus and the rich young man revolves around the young man's inability to see the Law of God as anything more than a way for humans to display their goodness or their badness. But Jesus calls him to see the Law, instead, as a display of the unique and infinite goodness of God. And while this way of looking at the Law takes us out of the equation, it also has the effect of separating us from the God we hope our Law-keeping can connect us to. Jesus solves this problem by calling the young man deeper into God's heart by pointing out that while humans can't be good, God can - by giving up everything he owns (his own life!) and giving it to the poor (by saving us from ourselves and from destruction!).

Misusing the Law - Oct 13 - Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost

The book of Ecclesiastes' raw outlook on the fallen human condition sees the pursuit of money and material goods as an empty waste, a vanity. But then, in the next breath, it will turn towards the enjoyment of the things money can buy as genuinely worthwhile. For the writer of Ecclesiastes, the difference in these two different viewpoints comes down to the view of money the reader takes. Do you see money as a source of meaning, of purpose, of salvation? Then money will always be for you a source of darkness, vexation, sickness, and anger. But do you see money as a gift from the Gift-giving God, one sign among many that he loves us and wants our happiness, an echo (however obliquely) of His willingness to give Himself to us for our salvation? Then, for you, money can be a reminder of His goodness and the beauty of the life He has given to us.

The Wrong Way and the Right Way to View Money - Oct 20 - Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost

In Christianity there are two different, but related, senses of the word confession. On the one hand, there is a confession of faith - the public and private statement of what Christians believe. On the other hand, there is also a confession of sin - the public and private statement that God is right and his human creatures are wrong. What these two confessions have in common is they both are fundamentally an agreement with God, that he is right and we are wrong.

These confessions carry with them a lot of benefit for the individual human: first, by turning us away from the fake “reality” that God is wrong and we are right and orienting us to true reality, we can know that we are right with God; and second, this right orientation to God’s reality produces psychological comfort as the individual human begins to experience much less dissonance in his life as he moves throughout God’s world.

Chuck and Aaron also discuss the benefits of private confession to God, corporate confession, individual confession with a pastor, and confessing our sins to those we have sinned against.

The people Jesus is talking to in John 8 really do believe that they are free, in spite of the fact that they really are under the thumb of the Roman Empire. But instead of framing their problem as a purely political problem, Jesus says that the problem at its root is sinfulness - theirs and others! And unless they are freed from this sin they will always be slaves. But Jesus has come to join himself to his people, making them his sons and daughters, and giving them the world as an inheritance. In other words, Jesus turns us from slaves into sons.

The question of whether Christians must vote is a hotly contested one in the Christian church; and while there are no explicit commands in Scripture to vote we are commanded to seek the good of the city in which we dwell. Christians, like all citizens, are faced with an array of issues to vote for, and the one issue which must drive the way Christians serve their communities is the preciousness of the image of God. And Christians must be controlled not by fear, or anger, or worry, but by the deep conviction that the true Ruler of the world is not any country, or any leader or political party, but King Jesus himself, who is orchestrating his sovereign rule over the world until the day when he returns and takes the kingdom completely as his own.

How to Vote as a Christian - Nov 3 - Twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost

A person’s appetite for and willingness to change can frequently be a matter of personality - some people are by nature more conservative in their personality and tend to resist change by nature, while others have personalities that are more progressive and tend to embrace and even pursue change.

The former group have the advantage of not being easily swayed into making bad changes in their life but the disadvantage of being unwilling at times to make necessary good changes. On the other hand, the latter group have the advantage of being willing to embrace much-needed changes but the disadvantage of sometimes rushing into unnecessary and even harmful changes. Both groups, of course, need each other to temper each other’s weaknesses. But how do we know what is bad change and what is good change?

The answer the Bible gives is that their is an unchangeable touchstone, Jesus Christ, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He never changes because he is perfect and thus needs no change. But we are not perfect, so we must be ready to change when needed, and we know we need to change when our thoughts or behavior does not match up with the perfect, unchangeable Jesus. So, with Jesus as our North Star, we can know when changing is necessary and when changing would be wrong.

St. James Lutheran Church was established in 1982. We are a church rooted on Grace Alone, Faith Alone, and Scripture Alone. And we are a body of sinners and saints focused on spreading the Good News in the Greater Glen Carbon community.

St. James is located in Glen Carbon, IL at 146 North Main Street. We are located across from Glen Carbon Village Hall and right next to Schon Park.
