These extracts from the European Respiratory Society (ERS) guidelines present the results of a systematic review evaluating the efficacy and safety of using an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS)/formoterol as-needed in adult and adolescent patients with mild asthma. 
The ERS recommendations suggest the use of this combination in place of regular ICS and short-acting β2-agonist treatment on an as-needed basis in adults, and propose a similar approach or regular treatment in adolescents. 
The study analyzed several endpoints, including exacerbations, asthma control and exposure to systemic corticosteroids. Despite the low certainty of the evidence, the recommendations are based on a balance of benefits and risks, taking into account patients' values and preferences. 
Finally, the guidelines highlight the need for further research, particularly in paediatric populations and in countries where this treatment is not approved.
