Worcester's Chief Equity Officer Kevin Lovaincy stops by Talk of the Commonwealth to talk about his role with the city. He's only been on the job for two months and joins the administration at a time when American businesses are pulling back from DEI. Worcester, however, is committed to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs. The conversation starts with Lovaincy defining DEI and what it means in Worcester. Lovaincy says that DEI looks at exclusionary practices and tries to eliminate those systems to make sure that everyone has a fair opportunity. People need to feel accepted, heard and valued. He says it is a myth that less qualified people end up getting hired. Lovaincy says it is looking at some of the historic barriers that might have pulled individuals back. He says no matter what the climate is nationally Worcester, under City Manager Eric Batista, will remain committed to creating a welcoming city where people feel safe.
