Fino Fusco came to Meath Street in the Liberties from a village in the mountains of south Italy some 50 years ago. His parents ran a chip shop called Fusco's.
He had not one word of English and was placed in the local school, St James' with some 400 local lads. For two years he was protected by a great friend called Patrick, and then his parents took him out and sent him to Boarding school in Killashee. They thought he would catch the study bug - but he hated school and knew all along that he wanted to work in his parents' chipper. Then he was sent to a former boarding school called Belcamp, on the Malahide road. He had no interest and spent most of his time hanging around with a few lads from the recently built Darndale.
He was invited to leave Belcamp early and went working in the chipper. His destiny was the chipper, no matter what he studied - or did not study.  
Chippers made money in the 1970s, 80s and 1990s but now only 10% of chippers are Italian in Ireland, due to changing habits.
