As migrant workers across the US face an onslaught of racist state terrorism from ICE and other federal agencies, solidarity from the labor movement is more critical than ever. One of the most powerful tools of repression that the bosses have is using racist dehumanization to split workers against each other across national lines. So now more than ever, it's critical that American workers understand that these migrant workers are our brothers and sisters, and that only by uniting with them can we advance our class interests. For as long as there has been a border between the US and Mexico, workers on both sides have only ever won their struggles against oppression through unity, rather than division. In this series, using the incredible book Radicals in the Barrio by Professor Justin Akers Chacon as our core guide, we will discuss the history of shared working class struggles by Mexican and Mexican American workers on both sides of the border from the Mexican-American War to the Cold War. 

In this first episode, we will begin by laying the groundwork for the politics of the Mexican Revolution, looking back through the history of colonization, independence, war with the United States, and relations with US Imperialism. In future episodes, we'll discuss the role of the working class in the Mexican Revolution, how these revolutionaries brought their ideas north across the border and influenced struggles in the US, and how multi-national unity has been critical to any labor victories won in the Southwest for over 150 years.

How much can an organization of the dawned do in a future no one wants to live in? What good is a union in Hell?

Topic and Guest: As we commemorate Black August and centering with WPFW’s Summer Pledge theme, and keeping in mind this critical time for the African World AfricaNow! goes into its archives featuring a past show with Professor Charles W. Mills. Professor Charles W. Mills who joined the ancestors on September 20, 2021 was Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center. He is the author of numerous books on race and political theory, including The Racial Contract (1997), Blackness Visible: Essays on Philosophy and Race (1998), and Black Rights/White Wrongs: The Critique of Racial Liberalism (2017).

We are currently living in an age where poverty and disease are big business. In a world where race and class continues to produce and reproduce ways of interacting.  This process has found ways to attach itself to our very construction of individual and group realities, therefore entrenching conscious and unconscious acts of racism as being natural and/or universal occurrences.

We live in a world where racial diversity is understood as ideological diversity…a constructed reality where the ascription of power is imposed on old ideas of identity and re/incorporated in new forms of marginalization. This holds true, despite any claim of post-this-or-post-that…that is made by dominant discourses.

W.E.B. Du Bois wrote in 1903 in Souls of Black Folk that: “THE PROBLEM of the twentieth century is the problem of the colorline..."

Today, in the 21st Century, we are still confronted with this color line, which is exacerbated by a symbiotic relationship with the drive to secure material wealth at rates that often rival the height of the age of imperialism, where the total control of Africa as well as other resource rich lands were dominant behavioral expressions in geopolitics. Prophetically, in his later writings, as W.E.B Du Bois is known to do, expands or situates his conceptualization of the color line into being intimately linked with class formations. ....

Often ignored by the sympathetic democratic rhetoric of liberals, are the racialized consequences of massive poverty and cultural displacement integral to the globalizing project of democratization (a euphemism for the unbridled proliferation of capitalism). ... 

Charles W. Mills is a Caribbean philosopher from Jamaica. He is known for his work in social and political philosophy, particularly in oppositional political theory as centered on class, gender, and race.

American Indian Airwaves is produced in Burntswamp Studios and started broadcasting on March 1st, 1973 on KPFK in order to give Indigenous peoples and their respective First Nations a voice about the continuous struggles against Settler Colonialism and imperialism by the occupying and settler societies often referred to as the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Latin and South America countries located therein.

I’ve been making music and been in bands since I was in school. I’ve always loved watching people enjoy listening, dancing and singing to the music. I feel that music is first and foremost about enjoyment. It should evoke an emotion, whatever the artist is trying to convey. 

My musical tastes are quite eclectic and varied. I tend to enjoy a song rather than a specific group or genre. And I guess this is why what I produce goes along with that ethos of variety 

Recently I’ve felt compelled to focus my time on creativity. Loss and the brevity of life have made me understand life is too short. So here I am. I hope you enjoy!
