One-man Austin, Texas instrumental metal outfit Huelga is ready to tear down genre boundaries with the release of a debut self-titled EP this ___.   The project of jazz multi-instrumentalist Michael Fonseca, Huelga's music has been incubating for over a decade.  Now Fonseca is offering his work to the world, inspired by modern composers Charles Ives, Frank Zappa, and Elliot Carter, as well as the Chicano Movement and the present political tensions that have come to a boil on the Texas/Mexico border. 
Currently a community college music teacher, Fonseca has taken a winding path while writing the songs that would become Huelga.  After a stint as a train conductor, Fonseca studied jazz drums in the University of Texas's graduate music program.  He played in Those Peabodys with The Sword founder John D. Cronise and has shared the stage with many nationally acclaimed jazz artists, including Grammy-winning drummer and composer Jeff "Tain" Waits.  
Fonseca's decision to start a solo project came after many years of feeling restricted as a drummer in traditional bands, both in terms of musical direction and logistical aspects.  He recorded all instruments for this EP, playing drums to a guitar and bass backing track during live performances.  The moniker Huelga, which means "strike" in Spanish, was inspired by an iconic photo of activist Dolores Huerta holding a  sign that reads "Huelga" during a farm workers' strike in 1965.  The name encompasses Fonseca's departure from the expected model of making music and also the spirit of protest that this project embodies.  
Fonseca looks forward to taking Huelga's polyrhythmic riffage to the masses in 2019, releasing the four song EP digitally and on cassette.  Mixed by Mick Kenny of Anaal Nathrahk, Huelga's thrashy math metal takes a stand against the anti-Latinx, anti-immigrant sentiment that pollutes the "Land of the Free" today.
