Solid Steel (29th September) In Hour 1 this week it's Washed Out, who released his latest album 'Mister Mellow' earlier this year on Stones Throw, followed by an excellent Lone remix of 'Hard to say goodbye' from the album. His new visual album is his latest since 'Paracosm' in 2013, moving away from the synthesizer-driven sounds of his early work and the more band-driven sound of his work on iconic indie label Sub Pop,  influenced by classic plunderphonics records of the past as well as the experimental collage techniques of musique concrete.He told us;
"I spent a lot of time looking for samples on Youtube while putting together my most recent album - so these songs are a few I discovered during that process.  There are a lot of different styles and genres here - but what ties everything together is a very raw, unpolished vibe to the recordings that I really like and strive for in my own work. I hope you all enjoy these obscure gems!"  You can catch him on tour in Europe starting with Lisbon on 24th November through to London on 7th December.

Solid Steel Radio Show 29/9/2017 Hour 1 - Washed Out

New mix from our “Retrospective” series is a tribute to Eduard Artemyev, who is celebrating his 80th birthday today (Born 30 November 1937 in Novosibirsk). He is a worldwide-known Soviet and Russian composer and electronic musician who scored over 200  films and theatrical plays including the famous works by Andrei Tarkovsky, Andrei Konchalovsky, Pavel Chukhray, Nikita Mikhalkov and many others.
Of all the Soviet composers, it's Eduard Artemyev who most in uenced the development of local electronic music. He was deeply involved into education, conducting his workshops and popularizing sonic experiments and sonic studies. Artemyev was one of the  rst operators of the cult synthesizer ANS, using the machine to record his soundtrack for Tarkovsky's “Solaris”. His other electronic works – for example, the soundtracks for “Stalker” or “Sibiriade” – today are considered the standards of the genre and are still being released on the various types of media.
Our mixtape is not only a retrospective of Eduard Artemyev's vast musical heritage, but also an excursion into the realms of his discography which still remain unknown to the wide audience. Thus, in addition to his key pieces from of cial releases, this mixtape also includes a lot of unreleased compositions as we handled almost the entire archive of his works cutting out sound tracks directly from rare  lms and documentaries.

Новый микс из серии «Ретроспектива» посвящен 80-летнему юбилею Эдуарда Николаевича Артемьева — советского и российского композитора и электронного музыканта, широкой публике известного прежде всего в качестве автора музыки к более чем двумстам фильмам и театральным постановкам — включая известнейшие киноленты Андрея Тарковского, Андрея Кончаловского, Павла Чухрая, Никиты Михалкова и многих других режиссеров.
Из всех советских композиторов именно Эдуард Николаевич больше всего повлиял на развитие отечественной электронной музыки. Он преподавал, проводил мастер-классы и занимался популяризацией экспериментов в области звука, работал с новыми устройствами — например, стал одним из первых операторов культового синтезатора АНС, записав с его помощью саундтрек к «Солярису» Тарковского. Его другие электронные работы — например, саундтреки к «Сталкеру» или «Сибириаде», сегодня считаются эталонами жанра и до сих пор выпускаются на всевозможных носителях по всему миру.
Наш микс — это не только ретроспектива обширного музыкального наследия Эдуарда Николаевича, но и экскурс в неизвестные широкой публике территории его дискографии. Так, кроме ключевых композиций с официальных релизов, в микс вошло множество неизданного материала — мы переработали практически весь архив кинохроники, «вырезая» звуковые дорожки напрямую из документальных и художественных фильмов.

Solid Steel (1st June) This week we welcome back Prefuse 73, who has his first solo album in three years 'Sacrifices', coming out on 15th June on Lex . Following a detour into fractured, kaleidoscopic hip-hop on recent releases, he has become increasingly interested in injecting a sense of space into his characteristically complex productions. The resultant 17-track collection is akin to watching an old photograph deteriorate in one’s hands, as otherwise dense beats dissipate into airy expanses of emotionally resonant electronics. His trailblazing early albums altered the course of underground music and influenced the paths of countless artists, though few could emulate his uncanny skill for evoking urgency via virtuosity. You can catch him playing at Low End Theory on 13th June and he told us;
"Not much to say about this mix other than this is a Pt.2 // follow up to the Prefuse 73_Solid Steel that was compiled in 2015. Around the 12 track mark, all of the raps lose the words and become instrumentals for all of those sick of words. Most of the material comes from cassette, I hope this can serve as an accompaniment to your Summer."

Solid Steel (22nd February) DK starts with a few current gems leading with the huge Romare track 'Your love', new music from Ty and the stunning single from James Blake, plus Machinedrum remixing Guilty Simpson and a classic Donald Byrd production for The Blackbyrds.
Then we welcome Joe Acheson (aka Hidden Orchestra) with his latest mix celebrating the release of the single 'Fourth Wall' from the  'Archipelago' album on Tru Thoughts. Like previous mixes it features all the variety of music that Joe has been listening to in the last year or so, much of which he has added to, mashed up or remixed, with lots of spoken word and field recordings. One of the themes is sleep, or the lack of it - and there's a strong theme of imagined live collaborations - Kelpe with Thom Yorke, Ivor Cutler and Johnny Cash trading verses over Jan Johansson's piano with added beats, Four Tet and Neil Cowley, Steve Reich with vocals from John Lennon and Finsta Bundy…
