The the vast series of Williamsburg Concerto contains entire re-writes of all six of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. This cycle #2 was itself an entirely new compositional breakthrough for me. Studying Bach and minimalism, I was trying to create an "UberMinimalism" where as I prefer the term "steady state music" for the works of Glass, Reich,et al. I wanted to create a glacial type harmony that moved past normal concepts of sustain and duration. These works in WC#2 the "Quarter Note=4" is the mothership movement with five other satellite pieces playing friction against sustain, angles of light against breath and volume. Conceived for mixed wind quintet of players that DO NOT use circular breathing techniques the score is so simple no ensemble has ever really take these works seriously, if its easy looking it can't be good music! Especially in this age of the "New Complexity"! But in fact, slowing down to the absolute basic time of whole note equals one minute, this 12 note sequence is in fact 12 minutes long. And all wind players learn from youth the power of long tones - this is the extreme! And yet even within this simplicity, many organisms exist!
