Afterhours house and bass-inclined tunes from the Scottish producer.
Sei A is young Scottish "tech house" producer Andy Graham. The quotation marks reference Graham's Discogs page. And while this might not be an entirely inaccurate description of the music he makes, it would be an over-simplification of an artist who's drawn upon a wealth of 4/4 styles since debuting back in 2008. Graham's first LP dropped that year through Missive, showcasing an artist who wasn't afraid to marry melody to stomping club beats, while his latest full-length on Turbo, White Rainbow, combined claustrophobic synthesizers with restless vocals and rhythms. In addition to marking himself out as a bit of remix specialist—Terence Fixmer, Booka Shade and Azari &amp; III have been among his recent refixes— Graham heads up the Seinan Music imprint, which has proffered a modest trio of releases since being established in 2008.
For all of Graham's acquired credits these past few years we have to admit to being a little taken aback by this mix for us. As touched on below, a subtle yet distinctive bass music influence runs through these 65 minutes (think Mount Kimbie rather than Skream), all fleshed out by a delicately composed selection of afterhours house.
What have you been up to recently?
For the last couple of months I've been getting together some fresh tracks. I've been back and forth with a lot of material but really trying to nail/develop a certain sound, trying to curate a fresh sound for myself and listeners alike to keep it all interesting and different at the same time. On the release front I've been finalising two new EPs for Turbo, with one of the tracks featured at the start of the mix, "Frozen Flower."
How and where was the mix recorded?
The mix was recorded in my small studio in London. I used two Pioneer CDJ-1000s and a Pioneer DJM-600 mixer. I then took it all into Logic 8 and fixed it up slightly. I use Logic for production and like to have my mixes at the end to have a somewhat wholesome sound/mix.
Can you tell us a little bit more about the idea behind the mix?
The mix was to try and cover various elements of techno/bass/dub; mainly using it as a warm-up tool to bring it forward into the "later hours" type vibe and also to showcase a couple of new Sei A tracks/remixes.
Your mix appears to draw upon bass music influences—would this be accurate? And if so, has this influence been creeping into your music recently?
Without a doubt, yes. I'm glad this mix shows that. My DJ sets are somewhat covering that sound more and more. Living in London has helped this as well. Although Glasgow has something really special going on at the moment but that's well deserved. There's so much good music out there, the wealth of talent at the moment is so inspiring, it's amazing.
What are you up to next?
Next I have a couple of EPs lined up for Turbo. A new collaboration with someone (no names attached for twitter legal reasons) which will cross loads of sounds—bringing in some really cool singers to work on the collaboration as well. I also have film and game scripts to work on. On top of all that I will begin to make new bodies of work, hopefully making the third album something to remember, if it even becomes an album.

With the signing of Tale Of Us we added the shooting stars of the year to our festival‘s line-up. The Italian duo of Matteo and Karm has started to rewrite the rules of House Music about a year ago. Their mixture of House and Techno with dashes of Nu-Disco, Pop and even Rock elements is so impulsive and emotionally deep, that you will feel goosebumps all over your body. With their destinctive sound they are among THE Slo-Mo-house pioneers just next to the Wolf & Lamb family and Art Department. Meanwhile it has become almost a MUST to own a remix by them. Labels such as Kompakt, Life & Death, or Visionquest favour them as much as WhoMadeWho, DJ T., Thugfucker, GusGus and many more. We hope that Tale Of Us will continue to produce many more beautiful songs for us to enjoy and we really do look forward to a great set at FLY BerMuDa 2011.

He has already done his thing on the debut album from Douglass Greed with one of the most snappy songs featuring his voice and crackly refinements.

Dj Tennis is Manfredi Romano, born in 1970 and raised between New Jersey, Sicily and Parma in a family where music was such a small thing. No relatives playing any musical instruments, nothing to play at home, no one giving music any special amount of love. But despite this, his creative and artistic attitude have always centered around music - singing, playing and collecting weird and noisy musical instruments at every turn. In 1989 while studying computer science at the Pisa university (just to please his grandfather) he was already playing and singing in school bands and had an indie rock radio show on a local radio station in Palermo. 

Recording bands, organizing parties and DJ'ing at the tennis club where he used to play as a semi-pro player (the Tennis moniker comes from his passion for that sport) all became his way to support the costs of his studies. But when he graduated he never imagined he would turn that hobby into his career. Still he became a DJ anyway, while focusing first on promoting new underground music in his country and founding and developing some of the most important Italian underground musical events such as the Elita festival in Milan and the Dissonanze festival in Rome.

During the last 2 decades he started producing music for theatre, movie soundtracks and TV commercials. His production skills always take inspiration from the psychedelic dark and melancholic sounds of the 60s straight thru to early 2000’s IDM. To name a few influences: Beach Boys, The Who, Talk Talk, Ultravox, XTC, Fugazi, June of 44, Suicide, Radiohead, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada and Plastikman.

In 2010, tired of the output of the actual musical scene he decided to collect all of his musical works and, with Thugfucker’s Greg Oreck, to start a new techno and pop label called Life and Death. The name of the label has a specific meaning, inspired by the socratic maieutic process to turn subtle and “dead” elements into a new life and referring to the benefit and hypnotic power of music used in the mesmeric processes for brain therapy.

Tennis is actually based in Berlin where he also shares the label experience and a studio with Tale of Us. And he has worked hard to create a crew of young and inspired musicians like Clockwork, Esperanza among others.

Raw sounds from an LA b-boy.

You don't get a word like "motherfucker" attached to your name for no good reason. William Bensussen, AKA The Gaslamp Killer, has been in peoples' faces right from the start. Coming up in the rock town of San Diego, Bensussen would continually clear dance floors in the city's Gaslamp district—hence the name—by playing Mobb Deep and Dilla.

Things didn't stay this way forever. In LA he became a resident DJ at Daddy Kev's Low End Theory, the mythologised weekly party and producer hangout that has seen the likes of Daedelus, Nosaj Thing and Flying Lotus rise from its ranks. It was on the latter's Brainfeeder that GLK met a global audience as a producer. 2009's My Troubled Mind and the following year's Death Gate threw up his love of grizzly beats and obscure samples. Seeing GLK behind a pair of turntables is, however, when the MF tag makes most sense. His shows are the epitome of unhinged energy. Rock, jazz, bass music and funk are just as likely to be aired as hip-hop, as he wigs out with his now trademark dance moves.

GLK's "Resident Killer mix" is 45-minute slice of what we're talking about—plus you get the added bonus of a coda comprised solely of music from Breakthrough, his madcap debut album which was released today through Brainfeeder.

What have you been up to recently?

Touring (as usual), working on new music with Jungle By Night from Amsterdam, not to mention enjoying this amazing summer of love!

How and where was the mix recorded?

In my room at my house in Los Angeles on ProTools with my Dr. Sample 303.

Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?

It's one of my best mixes yet. The first part is all about the heavy newer beat music with a bunch of unreleased stuff from my worldwide crew of beat making friends. The second part is a little more hip-hop turntablist influenced and the third part is all brand new GLK Breakthrough material!

Tell us about the writing of Breakthrough.

I worked on it tirelessly between touring and touring—trying to work with some of my favourite LA musicians to make it all come to life a little more than my previous records. Also, had to reach out to Dimlite (CH) all the way out in Zurich cause he is one of my favourite producers of all time and I am working on a whole record with him soon!

Outside of your LA base, where do you see as being other key strongholds for your sound?

London, Manchester, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Athens, Tokyo, Johannesburg and New York fuckin City are some of my most favourite places to play. They always get what I'm bringing to the table and always have amazing openers playing with me that make me want to run for the hills! Some of these cities even have Low End Theory-related events that stemmed from our little Wednesday night club in LA. Pretty fuckin cool.

What are you up to next?

Release parties all over the world plus a new Low End Theory podcast with a VERY special guest! Even planning a trip to India with Gonjasufi to try and record some new material there. But it's all in the works so I can't promise anything just yet!
