Fort Romeau continues to roll out thoughtfully detailed productions for Ghostly in 2013. In March, the London-based producer released the Chicago house influenced "SW9" single on Ghostly's sub-label Spectral Sound, and showed his versatile house rhythms in July with its follow-up, the Jetée / Desire single. 2014 will see his debut album for Ghostly — it's his second full-length record, with his debut album Kingdoms being released last year on LA outsider dance institution 100% Silk.

In the meantime, he continues to forge masterful house on this four-track EP, entitled Stay / True. The title track is perhaps the producer's most memorable track yet, a languorous seven-minute slow-burner that moves away from classic house territory in a more experimental direction, cruising along on a leisurely arpeggiated synth figure and a simple but effective kick/clap pattern. The more classically house-influenced "Your Light" is all tight kicks and vocoder-laden vocals, while the "Together" starts with the sound of field recordings and then drops a heavy 4/4 kick and even heavier bassline. The 12" version comes with an exclusive track ("Trust Me"), as does the digital version (the dancefloor-focused house belter "And Now").

Elliot Rosoff (producer): “I am primarily a concert violinist and have played on records by people as diverse as Philip Glass, Deodato and LL Cool J. In the early ‘80s, I had a studio, Opal Studios and our engineer Andy Langston did a lot of R&B and disco production - our projects included a disco version of Jesse Green’s "Nice And Slow." On "Ain’t No Way," the singer was a girl called Brenda Watts – she had released a few records beforehand like "Who Needs A Love Like That" but seemed to disappear from music after Opal. I remember that we received great feedback and a lot of club play across New York.” Phil Barr (writer): “During the ‘70s, Elliot was one of the few people in New York that had a 24-track studio. ‘Ain’t No Way’ had originally been written as a hard rock track - Elliot liked it and we started working on an R&B version of it which he put out on his label, Silver Cloud.”

The dynamic duo of Sandman &amp; Riverside are at it again as the FastFWD label unleashes its eleventh release. Their Play Wit You EP is chock full of sexy house funk with top notch remixes from a couple of house music&rsquo;s influential tastemakers, Ron Trent and DJ Minx. The EP contains three originals featuring vocalist Kymberli Wright, all layered with drumbeats and synthesizers of varying timbres to take the listener on a whimsical journey &hellip; all cuts are bonafide galactic head nodders. First introduced to the house world via the Defected label, Kymberli Wright&rsquo;s soulful vocals gained notice throughout Detroit and beyond through her contribution to all-female jazz band Straight Ahead as well as having worked alongside such noted artists as Mary J. Blige and George Clinton. The first track with Sandman &amp; Riverside is &ldquo;Play Wit You,&rdquo; a Detroit-flavored gem filled with popping drum machine percussion, dueling synth melodies, and Wright&rsquo;s irresistible vocal hooks on top. &ldquo;PopTune&rdquo; is next, offering an enticing throwback to club music of the late &lsquo;80s within some powerful beats. Add Ms. Wright&rsquo;s wonderful vocal lines and this cut takes on the feel of Human League meets Shannon. The third track on the EP is &ldquo;SuperSonic,&rdquo; not to be confused with the classic JJ Fad ditty, though it&rsquo;s not too far off. Sandman &amp; Riverside&rsquo;s funk production backs the swirling, processed, and synthesized vocal phrases and outer space vibes. A pared-down Dub of this appealing track is also available. On the remix tip, the Prescription Records&rsquo; legendary Ron Trent reveals a hypnotic ten minute revision of &ldquo;Play Wit You&rdquo; that merges sensual loops and vocal effects into the soundtrack to a dark dance floor full of bodies in motion. It&rsquo;s a lofter&rsquo;s dream. Detroit&rsquo;s DJ Minx (Women On Wax) offers her vocal and instrumental Queen Beats versions which satisfy through booming low end, solid late night rhythms, and building, melodic chords. It&rsquo;ll have folks in the club grooving with drinks high in the air.

We continue 25 years of Solid Steel with a mix from Photek, a legendary figure in music since the early nineties who featured many times on the show with tracks from Modus Operadi, Form & Function up to Pyramid from his recent album Ku:Palm, plus 'Into the 90's' from 1994 that also featured on Coldcut's Journeys by DJ mix CD. As ever we wanted something different and this mix titled 'Solid Steel Skool Dayz' suggests the music he listened to growing up with classic tracks from Gwen McCrae, ELO, Roxy Music, Inner Life and Joyce Sims.

It's been a while since our last guestmix, and what better way to keep it lit then with an exclusive mix from an artist that's a housemate of the label and a friend, Satin Jackets. The last year has been a big one for this German based outfit (no pun intended) with releases currently sitting high on Beatport charts, productions in great demand, a worldwide following and the kicking off of the first series of live shows all over the place. Judging by the outfits work ethos this is only going to be the tip of the iceberg. 

Satin Jackets trademark sound is slow, sultry and brimming with optimism and todays mix reinforces this aesthetic. With a BPM that's in no hurry this mix is full of summer heat. With plenty of hooky vocals and a non pretentious approach to track selection this typifies Satin Jackets ethos of music to make you smile. We caught up with Tim and Den to ask them a few questions, some pertinent and some pointless.
