Akase is the new collaborative project from Harry Agius (aka producer Midland) and songwriter/vocalist Robbie Redway. After meeting at Leeds University, the pair have been busy working together behind the scenes, building a selection of sublime tracks to present to the world that exist in the innovative cracks between musical boundaries. Influenced as much by Leeds sound-system and Dub culture as Depeche Mode or the wide electronic soundscapes of Jon Hopkins, Akase's latest single, Murmur, plays with ideas akin to both ‘Violator’-era Depeche Mode with a palette that nods to Midland's recent Aus Music releases. In January 1978, Sun Ra brought a quartet to Italy. He bought himself a Crumar Mainman keyboard, then made two double albums in Rome. His new drummer, Luqman Ali, had been in the Arkestra in Chicago; Sun Ra hadn’t brought a bassist, so programmed some keyboard ostinatos; his trumpeter, Michael Ray, broke into stratospheric runs, battling John Gilmore in furious improvisations. Gilmore was closer to Coltrane now than ever been and they fittingly made a driving version of ‘My Favorite Things’. But laments like ‘When There Is No Sun’ are equally inspired.

With the release of “Oba”, BBE has uncovered a rare gem. Production duo Dan Stillit and Oli Savill (collectively, Deep Tenor City) bringing together a wide group of the most accomplished (some Grammy- nominated) artists from the worlds of Jazz, Latin. Fusion, Funk and Afro-beat. “Oba”, recorded in the winter months of 2003, is a complex and percussion-rich slice of glorious afro-cuban jazz fusion, is only now seeing the light of day, having this year been given serious underground airtime and club play.

The EP also features an infectious and distinctive and remix from the mighty Opolopo and a vocal-rich deep house remix from AriesAudio (Josh Emman). Again, both tracks have been had strong early reception in the underground scene.


Deep Tenor City - Oba (Opolopo Remix) [Radio Edit]

After getting ins on the debut release from Lobster Theremin's Distant Hawaii imprint, we're straight onto the next, with a track from DJ Sonikku's Secret Island EP, dropping at the end of next month.

Directly inspired by and conjured up from the dreamy 16-bit realms of the Sega Megadrive, the London-based DJ Sonikku has used the legendary game console as a proto-MPC platform to assemble Secret Island's three Internet-centric tracks. Our top pick, "On the Rocks" provides the release with a tropical intermission. Steel drums energise the track with a calypso house undertone, with the tinker-toy motif upholding the track's atmosphere of a lackadaisical beach-scape.

Secret Island drops in full on November 27th.

DJ Sonikku "On the Rocks" - Boiler Room Debuts

While no one has confirmed who it was playing those alleged new Burial tunes at Unsound last week (although it seems Kode9 was the culprit), it very well could have been post-rock-turned-electronica crew Aucan providing the salt mine soundtrack, at least if the first song off their new album, Stelle Fisse, is a good example of what the trio has been up to since last summer's far more aggressive EP1, which featured noisecore baron Otto Von Schirach.

That barrel of sonic piss and vinegar came courtesy of Ultra Records, a surprising sell for one of the most commercial imprints in dance music. The new tune, "Friends," on the other hand, is out on Florestano's newly minted London imprint, Kowloon, which makes us wonder if the tapes got switched in the mail. This version of Aucan soothingly scrubs your soul with a siren's call of a vocal cutting through a fog of heavy gaseous synths and murmuring breaks that readily recall the most uplifting melancholic moments of that far more mysterious London producer. The mood is still dark enough for Halloween, but that doesn't mean it has to be frightening.
