THERE’S NO BETTER TIME TO BREAK UP

It can be hard to pin down the elements that make up a city's signature sound, but when you hear it, you know it. And Winston Hazel's new track, “Break Up”, is 100 per cent Sheffield, from the boom and buzz of its bassline to the bitter-sweet choral hook that pierces it through the heart.

Not that this is a surprise. Winston has been pounding out high-tensile dance music for decades, even helping to define Sheffield's electronic echo as one half of Forgemasters – their “Track With No Name” became the first ever release on Warp Records back in 1989. Now, with this new release on Shabby Doll, he has delivered a tune that balances its relentless industrial groove with a melodic pulse that nags and tugs at the soul. Just like Sheffield. Just like Winston.

A tireless DJ and producer as well as a true originator, Winston Hazel helped gift house music to the city via his mid-eighties parties that pitched new American dance sounds up against his beloved funk, jazz and soul. It was an irresistible concoction, and from these early innovations grew a city-centric dance industry that continues to echo – and still has Winston at its heart. He's deejayed round the world and recorded for an array of quality labels, but his dedication to the dancefloor burns as fiercely as ever.

Winston's original version of “Break Up” is backed with a remix by fellow Sheffielder Squarehead – “Squarehead’s Deadline Dub”. A young producer who understands what makes the city move, Squarehead keeps the furnace firing with powered-up percussion and a hollow metallic thump.

The digital release also includes a remix by fellow Sheffielder Iaka. As a DJ and promoter at the city’s Bunga Bunga night, as well as co-founder of the 5ANDSEVEN label, Iaka has fingers all over Sheffield’s pulse, and his crisp, crunchy refit is more than worthy of the city’s respect. Together, these tracks pack a real punch at the heart of the Shabby Doll catalogue, which is shaping up in fine buy-on-sight style after just a few months in business.

Winston’s career has taken him from pirate radio outlaw to Warp pioneer to Sheffield scene stalwart to crucial producer, and still he hammers out the rhythms to fearsome acclaim. Only a few months ago, he worked with Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley on The Big Melt – a film and music project that some might say created the definitive Sheffield soundtrack. But it doesn't stop there for Winston, and if you want to hear his next irresistible move… stick with him. Because he’s back again. And this time, it's all about breaking up.

New Wave Mix

Sven Väth (born 26 October 1964, Obertshausen, Germany) is a Frankfurt based DJ/Producer in the electronic music scene since 1981; playing for over 32 years and counting. His single, “Electrica Salsa” under the alias OFF launched his career in 1986. Lovingly referred to as “Papa Sven” by his fans, Sven Väth has made his mark in the music community by being one of Germany’s “pop stars” in the nineties, running two famous night clubs in Germany, and starting his own company Cocoon, that encompasses a booking agency, record label, and a branch for events. He is recognized for cultivating the underground electronic music scene not just in Germany but in Ibiza as well, with his own night at Amnesia for fourteen years and after-parties at creative locations around the island. Sven Väth is a major proponent of vinyl, using only two decks and a mixer for his extensive DJ sets, the longest he has been known to go for is 30 hours.

this is the 9th chapter in my 'trust me i was there' series - this is the part 1 from 1991.

91 was the year i started on pirate radio with my dj partner swift (not mampi swift btw, a different one!) we were on impact fm and our first show was the first time i'd touched a pair of technics - till then i'd been using decks without pitch, or if i was lucky some soundlabs. the studio mixer was an mrt 60, futuristic business at the time :D

swift and i did 4 hours every sat night and 4 ours sunday night, plus any cover shows we could do. keen...

music wise - 91 was a real turning point, you can really hear the uk sound starting to take off, most tracks had a breakbeat instead of the 4/4 kick that had been more common before and it sounds like the samplers were getting used in the studio more and more - for me, the music up to this point was great, but from 1991 its just becomes exceptional. the golden era of the jungle sound has now begun :D

Stu N has loved music since a very early age but it was with the dawn of rave that he found his true love! Living in Hastings with its legendary venue on the pier, he used to sit underneath to hear the new and excititng sounds coming from the ballroom, then in early 1991 he borrowed ID and got in and has never been quite the same since! 

The horns and hoovers of the euro breakbeat sound affected him to such and extent that even now in a quiet room it is all he can hear, better still he is back playing the music he loves (truly it never went away but now other people want to hear it as well)

However this doesn’t mean that Stu is not able to hold a crowd, he has always remained close to his roots by playing very occasionally at live events around the south coast. Most recently he's played at the now legendary 'Encapsulated Energy' parties in Hastings, alongside legends such as 'Jumping Jack Frost', Nebula II, LTJ Bukem and 'Shades of Rhythm' along with a single adventure to the mighty 'Labrynth - The Phoenix Rising' which was over the August Bank holiday in London.
