British rock and blues band Planet Graffiti, formed in 2010 with producing some classic rock sounds on their debut album ‘Standing Tall’.  After a years break, their new album, ‘Bad News’ shows how Planet Graffiti have grown as a band and developed their own style of British rock and blues.

Planet Graffiti are Brent Hutchinson on guitar and vocals, drummer Donna Peters and bassist Rupert Peters.  They have been recording and gigging with their new sound and material solidly since early 2012.

With 10 original well-crafted songs on their new guitar driven album ‘Bad News’, Planet Graffiti have created a more personal, raw approach to their recordings by writing, recording and producing the entire album themselves.

The band’s varied influences from the likes of Robert Johnson, Gary Moore, SRV, Jimi Hendrix, Thunder, Queen, Ray Charles, Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd, have encouraged them in creating their different take on rock and blues.

The debut album, “Standing Tall”, clearly showcased the bands songwriting abilities from the epic ‘Same Old Song’ to the title track ‘Standing Tall’.  The new album finds Planet Graffiti pushing forward as they make use of their trademark full dynamic sound that can be heard during their live performances.

Planet Graffiti have developed their sound both live and in the studio making ‘Bad News’ a diverse album which can be heard by the delicateness of ‘Stevie’, to the funkiness of ‘Bad Advice’ which manages to transform itself into a poised drifting blues as Brent rebuilds the piece from the bottom up with a Peter Green influenced solo, full of delicate touch and tone.  The instrumental tracks on the album are the stuff of a tight tour band for whom playing live is second nature.  The track ‘Fix Me’ is a heartfelt song, predicated on a delicate acoustic being uplifted by Brent’s vocal and impressive accompanying harmonies.

‘Bad News’ also reflects Planet Graffiti as a hard working touring band, who have enjoyed well received appearances at The Cluny in Newcastle, to the legendary Half Moon in London, and recently enjoyed 2 nationwide tours with New Jersey’s Billy Walton Band.

Planet Graffiti are a power trio that have a massive sound.  “Bad News” is a benchmark album full of well crafted songs, great playing and stunning guitar tones.  ‘Catfish Swampers’ is a firm favourite with the bands live performances as Brent cuts loose with a dirty sounding tone over some tightly wrapped funk. The subtle dynamics are emphasised by Donna Peters’s playing, before the band slips back into the groove.  You could play this track to any rock and blues fan with confidence, knowing they’d enjoy it.  The song would sit right in place on a rock and blues radio show too.

‘Bad News’ is Planet Graffiti’s second offering and despite the pessimistic title, it’s a sprightly, guitar driven rhythm and blues album.  There are plenty of SRV and occasional Robin Trower influences, but ultimately Planet Graffiti convince us of the merits of their music on their own terms.
